My beloved Margret,
My life remains the thing of a fever dream. How I wish we had been able to make this journey together. Such is the change between our lives with the dwarves in Greycloak mountains and this current existence I wonder at times whether I too have slipped from the world and all that lies before me stands as a challenge to regain my position at your side in the afterlife.
I spent some more time with Getty Ambershield in Daring Heights, dusting off my skills with gems and precious metals. What once dominated my days now seems just a sideline. So much so that I was drawn back to Fort Ettin and the tales that its inhabitants bring. Such tales, such adventures. They somehow make me feel young and old at the same time.
Just yesterday, I was taking my early morning stroll through the gardens surrounding the fort, when there came a thunderous blast of trumpets. Shuffling myself over to investigate what could be happening I found myself at the front of a crowd standing next to a tall winged tiefling named Arkadius and his friend, a beautiful halfling lady, with flowing hair and a huge winged unicorn at her side. As I recovered from such a sight, I noticed Miss Zabinski (The shop-keeper from my last letter) and a blue skinned half elf by the name of Osborin had also found themselves at the front of whatever was about to happen. Arrayed in ranks before us stood hundreds of little sprites. Clothed in wonderful gold and crimson presenting an offer of glory, treasure and victory. I didn't want to cause a fuss so trusted that my companions knew what was happening and kept quiet as we were led away to the feywild.
The Feywild Maggie. Another plane of existence. Just standing on its rolling hills left my head spinning and my heart racing. It was overpowering. Lady Merla (the delightful halfling who appears to have had plenty of experience in this strange new world) was kind and patient, helping me centre myself and regain a sense of up and down. Just in time as a massive armour clad Fey appeared behind us, the so called 'Queen of Summer' but not a queen like I've read about in my books. She held a sword bigger even than our tall winged Teifling companion Arkadius. Queen Titania (mother of Merla!) commanded us in an imperious tone. Showed us her army of Sunflower warriors (fearsome beasts that somehow Miss Zabinski had met before...). Queen Titania revealed the start of a war in the Feywild; Summer against Winter. Out of my depth seems to be a recurring theme. But war! Maggie could you ever see me as a soldier? Only the courage my new friends displayed kept me from asking to return home.
Our task was set out before us. Assist in the capture of a Fort at the base of some snowy mountains sat in the bend of a cold and fast flowing river. We met with a commander known as the Amber Duchess. A fearsome warrior clad in red armour, holding both shield and spear and clearly not a stranger to their use. Her confidence was evident (and Osborin clearly found it highly attractive). We would cross the river, approach the fort and ensure the gate could not be closed while the main forces of summer amassed for the assault. We were not the only team tasked so. A group of aggressive Fey (who were quite rude to the Lady Merla) led by an individual called Roxanne were set to the same goal. Arrogant and brusk they left us to make our own way.
Having found a fording point, I watched in amazement as Osborin (who had arrived in his pyjamas and since had to change into some spare clothing offered by Lady Merla) began to play a tune to calm the river. In the feywild, even the terrain has a spirit it seems, the waters slowed, calmed by his magical notes. I braved the ice cold waters and came out the other side chilled to the core. Shaking and numb I was so disoriented by the cold that I had to ask Arkadius where the fort was, despite its stone mass being plainly visible before us.
As we got closer we stopped to devise a plan. Arkadius would fly to the east, Lady Merla on the back of Astra (the magnificent winged unicorn) to the west. Both would provide distraction as Osborin, Celina and I found whatever mechanism managed the portcullis and disabled it. I've met powerful adventurers in Fort Ettin. But watching Arkadius and the Lady Merla fight was a wonder of its own to behold. Such powerful magics, such destructive forces they wield. Amazingly their distraction worked for long enough for Celina to get to the lever we sought. With a large collection of unusual tools she wrenched out some delicate looking cogs and we fought back to back for only a short while longer before the forces of summer arrived, forcing the fearsome winter soldiers to flee.
With powerful blood magics, the Amber Duchess claimed control over the river for the court of summer and began securing the fort for her queen. Happy with our contribution she offered each of us a powerful magic item. I have now a battle horn. Although part of me wishes to never be involved in a war again, it will inspire soldiers around me to great heroics should I blow into it.
Returning through the magics of Lady Merla we arrived just outside the Four Winds in Daring Heights and I immediately sought a large glass of strong sherry and my bed. This morning. Sat in my familiar room, my thoughts turn once again to the poor dragon orphaned in the snowy mountains to our West. I've seen a spot on the map likely to entice adventurers to similar deeds to claim the treasure held there and I must try to do something to stop further tragedy.
I remain yours, always.
