Expedition Report for Daring Academy
Subject: The Spider Cave
Date: 9th Tarsakh 1498 DR
Author: Igrainne (The Hung Rabbit, Swampside, Daring Heights)
Expedition Team:
Report:
We set out from Fort Ettin on the morning of 7th Tarsakh and arrived at the location on the morning of the 8th. The Spider Cave is located approximately 30 miles north (and slightly west) of Fort Ettin, just past the eaves of the Angelbark Forest. You will know you are on the right path when spider webs begin to show up on the foliage and rocks. The opening of the cave is big enough for a large creature to enter and the tunnel within is wide enough for two humanoids to march abreast.
The tunnel stretches out for 300 feet with no branching paths and leads into a large cavern. There are webs just about everywhere in the cave but not to the point where it is severely obstructive. However, if an explorer is wary of getting bitten by a venomous spider, it is recommended to bring along a trained pet spider or a druid who can wild shape into a spider to warn of approaching creatures on webs.
We found that the large cavern was home to a family of giant spiders, whose older members are able to speak the Common tongue fluently and understands some humanoid concepts such as money. Their names are listed below in order of age:
Ofrada is the matriarch of the clan. She is 284 years old and huge β one of the largest of her kind. She learned Common and taught it to her daughters and granddaughters. The spiders told us that they had not been in the cave for a long time and that they were being hunted by a pair of bigger predators that have been tunneling underground; they had already eaten several family members. The previous night, whilst camping at the edge of the Angelbark, we felt faint tremors in the ground which I deduced were likely caused by enormous creatures moving very quickly underground. We warned the spiders of this and they evacuated the cave before the predators could arrive.
The predators turned out to be a behir and some kind of earth elemental with 3 arms, 3 legs, 1 eye, and 1 mouth. They burst out of the cavern floor and the expedition team quickly neutralised them, for which we were rewarded by the spiders with a buried chest of gold. Even though the threat against their lives had been ended, the giant spider family is determined to relocate and are currently still considering where in Kantas they will make their new home. Now the Spider Cave has no giant spiders (though the regular-sized spiders are still there).
The large cavern has one other tunnel that leads away from it. It remains unexplored.
