Dear Diary
I finally managed to get another job. Being out of work for a few weeks has really taken its toll on my appearance. My beak is looking a little crusty, and my claws are long, twisted and chipped. The snow has been falling of late, and my coat was starting to look rather shabby. So I really needed to find some time to get a beauty treatment.
The gig was simple enough. Problem-solving for a well-to-do resort in Lightning Bay, a few hours boat ride from Port Ffirst. We assembled a group of six: Tayz, who I was thrilled to see again because he's a good bird person. Kelne, a clever halfling with a tricksy disposition. Varga, and excellent muscular half-orc. Levuka, one of the forest folk. And Faephix the musician.
The boat ride was uneventful save for some music improv, with some of joining Faephix in some sea shanties that I have committed to memory. After Leaper taught me his lost peoples' songs a few weeks ago, I'm starting to wonder if I should use my gifts to preserve more oral traditions? Anyway.
Arrival at the resort found it largely empty. Tayz identified a brightly glowing building on the grounds, and when we found the owner Margaret she confirmed that the job was to investigate this disturbance. Staff had been lost inside the white glowing fog, and the problem seemed to be gradually expanding across the resort. Margaret was smart enough to know that's bad for business, and she's lucky she got such a talented group to deal with her problem. She did take some convincing to spill the beans on the source of the problem: a recent conference of Fae. I worked a season tending bar at a holiday resort near Luskan as a fledgling, and I remember the corporate groups are always the most destructive guests.
As a group we worked up the courage to enter the fog, and found ourselves obstructed by Runes of Warding. Getting past the first saw us cursed with a gluttonous charm - Faephix and Kelne immediately started devouring buckets of ice cream that had been intentionally left there by a cruel creator. We resolved this by starting a food fight, which will presumably be a challenge to clean up. But Levuka was clear with Margaret that we took the the job that we wouldn't be held responsible for property damage; in retrospect that was a great move. I'll have to remember to thank her for that.
We confronted what appeared to be the source of the problem: an elf of the Winter Court who had been apparently been transformed into a form of Leopard and held captive by the disembodied voice of a chef. That's where my memory gets a little hazy. Must have been all the wild magic around.
Leo, the Fae Elf, was grateful for our help and was clearly moved enough to grant us a seal that offers and audience with his employer. Furthermore Margaret paid up 30 gold for our services and the return of her staff (admittedly as corpses, but still) - which is a good return on a day's work. Most importantly I now have a voucher for a free pedicure the next time I return to Lightning Bay. So my claws are still long and ugly for now, but at least I have a plan. I'll give Margaret and Emma a couple of days to clean up the ice cream, then head back for my spa day.
Can't wait.
