Margret,
I remain safe and healthy, having arrived in Daring Heights and settled into a lovely establishment called the 'Fair Winds'. You'd love it here, open plains, sunshine and a sense of something new, different and unexplored. I feel 20 years younger and haven't smiled this much since I was with you.
Our journey here was quite the tale, if I hadn't been there myself, I'm not sure I would have believed an aged jeweller like me had been a part of something so bizarre. But then everything that has happened since I stepped off that ship a week ago has had an odd dream-like quality. My only regret is not having you here by my side to experience it together.
I happened upon a note asking for adventures to escort a caravan of goods from the docks out towards Daring Heights. A Mister Cleaves offered to pay myself and a rather diverse group of wonderful characters to keep him safe on the roads. Two humans, but also a Tabaxi and a small Kobold. I can't imagine what the Greycloak dwarves would have made of me working with a kobold. But then I spent too long being judged for my ancestry to inflict the same on this little silver guy and my trust proved well founded.
With bandits at the forefront of my mind, we set out on the Swamp Way, the crisp morning air growing somewhat heavier as we passed through the boggy swamp but clearing as we came upon rolling plains. I was so nervous in the swamp, a perfect place for an ambush, but an ambush never came. I kept my nerves under control by playing my viol. It turns out that Faephix (the Tabaxi I mentioned) is also a musical type. We set about playing our time away. They are rather talented and I do very much look forward to playing again alongside them, music does good for the soul.
While stopping for a little tiffin by the side of the road. My colleagues and I were approached by a pair of invisible little fae creatures. Fairies or Pixies or such, I'm not sure. They had taken to stealing our food because some rats had chased them out of their food stores. They asked us for our help. Can you imagine it, a group of adventurers killing rats... But they were so small and so sweet we couldn't leave them without assistance. So off we went. The little tricksters shrank us down to their size because we would have been too big to be useful as we were. I couldn't help but think of that stage production we went and saw a few years ago, what was its name? Honey I shrunk the children or some such?
I shall not recount to you the fight; for I would have to result to vulgar terms and distressing imagery and I know how much you valued nature and all of its creatures. But needless to say, my teammates were spectacular. Leaping about slicing this way and that, casting powerful magics and generally giving off the air of a very cool and hip band of heroes. Meanwhile I realised I hadn't even packed a weapon! I tried to use that old shaving razor of mine but just ended up cutting my own hand like an old fool. I think in future I'll probably just stick to shouting encouragement from the sidelines.
Apricot (the mother of this little family of Fae) was so pleased she gave us all little magical trinkets. Honestly I think we would have all done it for free, but it seemed rude to turn down a gift. They also thankfully returned us to our standard size. It would have made the remaining journey rather awkward if they hadn't I guess. The rest of the journey seemed to just speed by, I think having overcome an obstacle, even one so small, we all felt that little bit more confident protecting the wagons. Perhaps we have what it takes to be adventurers after all.
Anyway, I will sign off, it's been a long day looking around this new town. I haven't found anyone yet who needs my skills in jewellery. But then I'm a new face and I know not many will trust my with their gems until I prove my worth. Rumour has it that there are some students looking for help with an expedition to some mountains. Maybe I can earn a name helping them out, that might help confirm to the town that my worth is far more than this old face suggests.
I remain yours. Always.
