Frustrated looks fill the Fort Ettin library as the sun sets on the Dawnlands. The sound of tools tapping away at glass and brass drawing the ire of the quieter residents. On a table in the middle of the room Alenea sits, six glass cases lining the table, each containing a different creature, except one.
The resident of the final case lies in front of her, a small mechanical canary, lightly restrained to the table, chest open and internals on display. A soft chirp emerges from as Alenea leans in close, a jeweller’s loop fixed to her eye as she closely inspect the whirring gears inside. Beside her a mimicry of the internals floats in the air, her hand guiding illusory gears into place as she identifies each new part.
The chirps rise in intensity as the elf finishes, swinging the plate that covered the canary’s clockwork interior and begins screwing it closed. She unhooks the string holding it in place and it hops onto its feet, testing its wings before launching into the air to fly around the room as Alenea watches. “Amazing. Who made these?” As the canary goes to land on a sleeping head across the room she plucks it from the air, an invisible mage hand guiding it back into its case where it hops around, occasionally fluttering into the air.
She flicks a hand and the illusion grows in front of her, exploding into a diagram of how the gears connect together. The intricacy of the gears is intense, far more complex than any rudimentary clock she’s seen before, parts of the work are missing, blocked from view by spinning gears and tightly coiled springs. The risk of catastrophic failure on disassembly too great to look deeper.
Alenea leans back and looks up at the plan in front of her looming above her.
“I can do this. I can make these.”
She pulls a seven legged cube from its case and opens it up.

I swear this isn’t a thinly veiled request for Artificers in Kantas
