There’s a light click as Toothy lets himself in through the side door of Lucan’s Leathers, his footfalls on the stairs leading up announcing his presence to both Lucan and Gilda who are seated round the kitchen table, Lucan chopping up the last bits for dinner as Gilda chats to him.
Gilda looks up to instantly spot the modded mechanical glaive that Toothy is proudly holding onto at his side.
“What and where did you get that bloody thing from?”
Toothy twirls the glaive triumphantly before setting it down beside the door.
“It’s how I got paid this time, got this too!”
He sets down a small mechanical beetle on the table that starts to slowly scuttle around. Lucan doesn’t even look up before saying “No animals on the table Toothy, we discussed this.”
“But it’s not even a real animal, it’s a tiny machine.”
Lucan only hesitates slightly before fixing Toothy with a stern look.
“Rules still apply.”
Toothy reluctantly puts the little beetle back in his pocket before sitting down at the table next to Gilda. She leans further forward, elbows propped on the table before she speaks again.
“And anyway, you need to give us the full story. Who’s exactly paying you with things like weapons and little machines and not just good ol’ fashioned gold?”
Toothy leans back in his chair a bit to think, face scrunching up as he remembers the details.
“Well, we officially got hired by this green elf lady with a copper braid called Imrel, but at first I thought it was this job was from a nice goblin lady called Bugbite selling cookies with her fish friend Egg outside the Fort. Turns out Bugbite knew only to direct us this magic closet that took us to the Twilight Court. Bugbite’s cookie stall was where I met Tercial and Wil, and then we met up with Alenea and Delialah who were already in the closet. Tercial even knew Fred yah know? Solid lad.”
Gilda gives a quick look to Lucan at the mention of Fred, he mouths back Probably an animal. Toothy is too engrossed in his story to notice the exchange.
“So get teleported, and Imrel is talking about being discreet this, and spy on these people that, and don’t mention that I employed you blah blah blah. All that sort of stuff that we’ve had from sneaky political clients before yah know?”
Lucan gives a curt nod, he’s certainly aware of the type.
“So us lot go on out after getting info on three targets. Emerged from the briefing room into this massive lake and the room we were in was actually part of a long longggg tower that went deep into the lake. And this lake was full of these towers, and I could see all sorts of people living there, both under and above the water. And right in the middle was this crystal palace. The palace for the court. Sooo sparkly.”
There’s a pause before Lucan interjets with “Wait, Twilight Court? Ain’t that in the Feywild?”
“Uh yeah I think? Anyway….”
Lucan throws his hands up in exasperation, saying mostly to himself “So he’s going to bloody different planes of existence now.”
“So then we’re outside this palace and we’re debating how to be getting this information on people without anyone knowing, and you know I’m not great with being discreet so me and Wil get to befriending some fishies in the lake to maybe do some scouting. While the others went off to do somethingggg. But anyway, I got talking to a rainbow trout called Cosmo, very nice but he couldn’t find anything about the lower level room we were looking for.”
Toothy starts to make a knowing face as he moves onto the next part of his story.
“So after that me and Wil met up with Alenea and Terciel, them two had some luck about the other target. Turns out they’re just a budding romance writer. Once inside we were hoping to get further in with the tour but we missed it. And we were being watched by a particular guard inside, so I went to distract him so the others might have better luck and…”
He can’t help the cheeky grin he makes as he says “And I managed to distract him for quite some time. In a quiet room. Downstairs.”
It’s it at this point Gilda gives Toothy a harty approving clap on the back, one that would probably take out most people as Lucan interjects with “And you just left the others to….” There’s an exasperated hand wave “with this…”
“Darfin, he was cute. And well the others wanted to distract him, so I did! Alenea even accidently walked into the room I was waiting in, all invisible though which surprised me, and certainly gave a hell yeah about it. Her being there kinda meant it had worked right?!”
“He?! Pah whatever I don’t care no more now.”
“Auntie you say this every time it’s a guy.”
“Well why would I care? Women are where it’s at!”
Lucan smacks them both upside the head with a wooden spoon.
“Okay okay. So after distracting Darfin I met up with the others, as Alenea and Delilah had discovered this weird room that one of the targets had mentioned in their diary. It was real neat apparently and filled with all sorts of contraptions and scrolls, but it was covered in dust so whoever was there hadn’t been back in a while. There was even a puzzle chest which this sic glaive was in and the mini machines and stuff. But the target’s notes were what were important, they mentioned things about The Fool who was also a Hexadrone. That he had gotten out that room, but no one in the palace remembered them being locked up and that he just left, which was confusing to the target. The person we had to report to, Miandra, certainly seemed happy about the information though she was certainly concerned that she couldn’t remember that this Fool was meant to have been locked up.”
“Whose the Fool?”
“No clue, guess he must have done something real bad to piss off a Fey queen and be locked up.”
Lucan stops cooking, and looks back from where he’s been standing at the stove after the spoon smacking.
“I think I’ve heard rumours from around town about this. Seems big news that he’s gotten out of that palace without anyone realising.”
Toothy just shrugs and the conversation moves on as him and Gilda begin to loudly chat more and mess around with the new glaive. Lucan turns around and thoughtfully stirs dinner, a concerned frown furrowing deep on his brow.
