Today is quite a big day in my life in D and D - so I thought this meek Tiefling would share a "tail" with you all. Today marked the publishing of the final episode of the first campaign of the Adventure Zone podcast. After 3 years and 69 episodes it has finished.
The Adventure Zone is what brought me to this adventuring group after 30 years away, and so to Kantas.
I was twelve when I first played Dungeons and Dragons (Fact fans I do indeed own an original Red Box rule set). I was only ever able to rope one friend in to play, so we had short, silly quests with one of us as DM and the other as a single adventurer in a dungeon. I knew I had met my match when I faced a sentient lawnmower in one battle.
It was another 30 years before I played again.
My career took me into finance, and numbers, and logic, and along the way that sense of imagination left me.
Some of you may or may not know that, along with my day job, several years ago I trained as a therapist, something I do outside of normal work hours. Being a counsellor often needs a lot of imagination, and it was something I was lacking. I needed to find a way to fire up that imagination again, and that led me to the Adventure Zone, a podcast I devoured episode by episode as I caught up the long, complicated back story. It was firing that imagination that led me to wanting to play again after all those years. A few years ago I was able to get a spot on one of Neil's campaigns and I was hooked.
Now my problem is that I can't put a lid on the imagination. There seems to be a 30 year backlog of ridiculous puzzles, side stories and intrigue I want to tell. Little did I think I would be part-time DMing in Kantas only a couple of years after returning to the game.
So that is my little tale. Thanks for everyone who has played with me in sessions, and coped with my terrible rule knowledge when I have been DMing. Here's to many more.
Oh, and listen to The Adventure Zone, its rather good.
