Wren stands in the middle of a small patch of dirt they’ve found round the back of someone's house in Port Ffirst. Vywk Vywk, one of the green skinned Grungs from the Frog Bog stands before them holding out the fabled whistlestick in her webbed palms.
She then swings the stick in a quick flourish of her right hand, using the momentum to create a short sharp whistle as the stick pinwheels to their side. Then just as suddenly she stands still and with a perfectly neutral expression she looks up to Wren, giving them a small nod.
Wren quickly flourishes their own stick, trying to mimic the movement, and proceeds to perfectly smack themself square in the forehead.
“Fucckkkkkkk”
They nurse the bruise slightly, only to look across and see Vywk Vywk giving an unimpressed look with a raised froggy eyebrow.
“Okay, okay. I’ll try again.”
There’s a lot of tries, a lot more forehead smacking, plenty enough swearing to get a nearby passerby annoyed, and even more repeat demonstrations from Vywk Vywk. But eventually, just as the sun is starting to set, Wren finally produces their first short sharp note.
Their cheer is heard halfway across Port Ffirst.

Back to the same dirt patch, but Stripes doesn’t even make it out of their baby sling as not before long Vywk Vywk has shooed them off somewhere. As Wren awkwardly stands around, the neighbours giving weary looks at the noise that’s to begin, their faces dropping as loud whistling starts across the rooftops. In contrast Wren’s face shoots up in excitement as they scramble to the rooftops to find Vywk Vywk and at the source of her whistling.
”Oi mind my roof tiles you lil’ troublemaker, I just got them replaced last w….”
But the person’s voice is lost as Wren leaps away, jumping between roofs with practiced ease. Soon finding Vywk Vywk perfectly balanced on a sloped rooftop on the other side of town, she gives a neutral nod as Wren approaches before pointing them off in another direction. This time Wren must lead Vywk Vywk to them with a clear and constant long distant note.
This back and forth continues on all day until Vywk Vywk seems content with Wren’s progress and they both sit down on a roof to eat some hard earned homemade sandwiches that Wren packed.

Wren waits at the usual spot, Stripes sniffing about nearby to see if there’s any new shinies that have been dropped this week. His huffs sound like he’s been unsuccessful in this endeavor so far.
Vywk Vywk soon emerges round the corner, always perfectly on time, and Wren’s excitement at the lesson that’s about to commence causes them to drop their own whistlestick in the mud. The grung does not look impressed at the fumbling, and goes to pick up the stick, wiping off the dirt before they hand it back to Wren. A sheepish look crossing their face as they quietly say sorry, before they reach out to take the stick back.
As they take the stick, their hand lands on top of Vywk’s Vywk’s for a moment and a strange feeling passes over Wren at the contact. They rapidly blink at this, surprised, before they look at their mentor, but her face is as unchanged and calm as ever. Perhaps Wren imagined it.
She points to where Wren should stand to watch, Wren obliges and makes to move but suddenly they’ve frog leaped into the air and landed flat on their ass. They look over their shoulder at Vywk Vywk who's smiling down at them, the closest to a laugh Wren has gotten out of her.
“You knew this was going to happen?! This isn’t permanent is it! Is it?”
Vywk Vywk merely points again at where Wren needs to stand, a knowing look on her face. Wren awkwardly frog leaps over, cursing slightly as they desperately try to adjust to this new way of moving.
They really shouldn’t have dropped that stick.
