A gentle breeze blows through a small clearing in the Feythorn, the afternoon sun permeates the area with a peaceful and serene light. Into this clear walks a tall figure clad in black armour and clutching a spear with a carved sapphire for the head. He stops in the middle of the clearing, closes his eyes and raises his head to the sky seeming to for a moment absorb the energy in the air around him. All of a sudden a squirrel scrambles up his leg and takes shelter in the small autumnal bonsai like tree that grows on his armour. The old traveler slowly looks down at his new guest with a large gentle smile.
“Oh hello there friend, how are you on the this very fine day?” The cautiously wonders out of the bonsai and begins to rub its head against his neck.
Chuckling the traveller returns the favour by scratching slowly scratching under the squirrels chin.
“Oh thank you friend, this is a most generous gift” at that moment a couple of small birds come out and land onto the bonsai as well, “oh look more new friends how wonderful. Hello there little ones I hope you too are having a fine day.”
From the surroundings several bushes seem to rustle.
“No please don’t be shy my friends, please please come out, let us all share in each others company and make this a truly blessed day.” From all around more animals appear from the undergrowth, foxes, mice, frogs, even a couple of badgers appear, a whole variety of forest creatures surround him.
“Oh my my well isn’t this quite the audience” he says softly chuckling. “Now seeing as you are all here I was hoping that you’d indulge this old fool and allow me to tell you my tale.”
All the animals seem genuinely excited to hear this story and began forming around him. The old one walks over to a large oak tree that stands in the clear and gently puts his hand on it.
“Hello there mighty one I hope you do not mind if I rest myself upon your magnificent roots.” A sudden breeze moves through the oak tree in such a way to almost seem as if the tree nod in agreement.
“Why thank you mighty one”, carefully placing his spear up against the tree, he takes a seat on the roots of the tree. “So where to start this tale, ah well I guess the beginning is probably the best place.”
All the animals stare intently waiting for the story to begin, even the flowers and trees nearby seemed to creak and move so they to can enjoy the this story.
“I was born far away from here and a very long time ago, in a place once known as the Autumn Grove. A beautiful place where the great oak father decided to bless with his power and allow the forest to always show the most wonderful colours of autumn permanently for us, the ones who serve him, to appreciate his divine influence.
“My clan where the sworn guardians of the Grove, it was a simple and idyllic lifestyle, we would dissuade outsiders who ventured to close to our borders not to enter the sacred grove. Most of the time it was quite fun coming up with new and better ways to scare them off, it was quite the competition but all played in good fun, I became something of a star player if I do say so myself.
“For 200 years we enjoyed this perfect life, and we believed that it would last forever, I even started my own family. For you see two of the neighbouring kingdoms had decided simultaneously that each one of them had the right to lay claim to land that they have never walked on, never loved or cherished, and never truly appreciated. They only wanted to satisfy their own greed and take more of what they didn’t need.
“At first we succeeded in scaring both of them away and stopped them from encroaching on our sacred grove, but this defiance served only to angry them both, they began send more and more soldiers to try and push us back and they where succeeding, try to fight a battle on two front is not easy my friends. We soon realised that perhaps we could turn them against one another and this would cause them to leave. And so we did fooling into thinking that the other was attacking or stealing supplies, however this only made our troubles worse.
“For you see their new found hated for one another was much much greater then their desire for our grove, and they became to burn it, to destroy our home simply to kill one another. They began to fell our mighty friends to build they contraptions of war, they have no remorse, no compassion for the land, evil in its true form.
“As this war raged we continued to try and stop it whilst trying also to save the grove which was slowly growing smaller. For 100 years this continued while our home burned around us, and while our home shrank so did my clan, some fell protecting our home and some we sent away to hopefully start anew somewhere safe. Even my family was..” he paused for a moment trying to hold back the painful memories that surged in his mind. “... lost. All until one day the fighting stopped, as for what happened between the two kingdoms I never know nor truly care, as when I looked at my home after I found I was alone, the last of my clan, the last guardian of the grove or the fraction that remained of it.
“I think another 100 or so years passed as I guarded my home alone, it returned to how it was before though I never fully enjoyed the games as I once did. And then one day the great oak father gave me a vision and told me to leave the grove and find a place to birth a new grove, maybe even a better one. And so that is how I find myself here in your wonderful company and even trying out this adventurer lifestyle.” As he looks the same gentle smile on his face, however he was greeted by looks of sorrow and sadness on the faces of his animal audience, even the plants and trees seemed to sag as if also saddened by the story.
“Oh no, oh my dear friends I am so sorry, perhaps a more cheerful story was in order but alas I must confess I have been selfish and say that telling you my story has done me a world of good,” he stands and retrieves his spear from the tree.
“How very forgetful of me, such an old fool, my name is Carnán, the last guardian of the Autumn Grove. Sharing in all of your company today has been a true and unforgettable blessing, thank you all. Now please go, be free and live peacefully lives my friends.” With that the animals slowly disperse with some coming up to Carnan to receive one last chin scratch before leaving.
“And too you my mighty friends, may you grow strong and true, the blessings of Silvanus upon you.”
Carnan walks into the middle of the clearing once again and closes his eyes takes a deep breath of air, and then depart back into the Feythorn. Ready for his next adventure.
