Jacinta Montajay, Igrainne (RETIRED), and 4 more like this

I finally got to meet some of the folks from Pi’s place, Forestroost, today thought they were very wary of us as outsiders (they reminded me very much of home in this regard, when was the last time Walking Stone even actively contacted outsiders?). Well, myself, Jacinta, Taff, Veridian and Osborion walked out to the split heartknot tree to see them. A black feathered person with a pointed mask named Carrie and a well hidden green/peacock feathered person called Speaksleaf approached us. We also met this two-headed deer out there, obviously very magical and very chill, but Osborion seemed quite terrified of it. Constantly thought it was going to eat us?
Either way, Carrie informed us that they wanted us to complete a task to assess the capabilities of us outsiders (I guess also to see if they could trust us). Help them to get rid of the Redcaps in the feywild, some very dangerous mushrooms that have been causing trouble. After some questions back and forth, Taff definitely giving her look to Carrie and Speaksleaf, they eventually teleported us through the tree into the Feywild. A very burnt Feywild (aptly named the Twice-Burned Forest or Angels’ Mirror). So so burnt, I… I had to take many moments to compose myself, and Jacinta wasn’t faring too well herself. But once we had both a good cry we were ready as a group to venture further in to the scorched woods.
Once further in (and certainly no flowers to be seen) we managed to find some burnt treehouses with Viridian and Nyra’s help. Had a little look in one, didn’t find much apart from a recently used firepit. Back on the ground the others had found some tracks, looked like they belonged to someone with very heavy metal booties, and they’d fallen down as well? (There was an imprint of a small mushroom body, they obviously weren’t having a good day).
We were looking for Redcap mushroom people, so this seemed as good any tracks to start with, so off we all went. Further in still, more ash and many many more mushrooms. There was even a riddle sign post that gave us warning ‘Fine knowledge of forest flora pays fruitful dividends, but fools possessed of curiosity will meet a poisonous end’. A warning I tried to listen to, but I still ended up with my fur aggressively standing on end after a little bump into a blue mushroom from myself and Osborin.
After the (only slightly deadly) mushroom woods we arrived at a very high stone plinth in a clearing, a place that seems to have had a lot of traffic over the years. The stone was covered in many different names, though any other words were in a language that none of us knew. All we could figure out was that it was called Skygrave, likely a memorial to lives lost in the horrible fire that’s decimated the lovely forest there. (Of course I laid flowers even if I knew very little of the people there and what went on).
Taff and Jacinta were able to continue tracking the mushroom with the iron booties nearby to a cave, its walls lined with these really cool bioluminescent lamps. We all snuck in with the help of Jacinta’s magic to find a large group of Redcaps, all wearing the same metal booties we had been tracking.
Everything went very quickly at this point, Taff and Jacinta taking aim, Taff managing to release a whole volley from just a single arrow. I made sure Veridian and Osborin were harder to hit with some invisibility as they both sent their own magic into the cluster of Redcaps (illusions and fires respectively). Another creature emerged from the shadows, a spider and crab hybrid called a Meenlock. I eventually joined with my own magic lightning until eventually we took them all down.
Before we all left we noticed a mosaic at the back of the cave, images of a forest being burned twice over. Underneath it were these words:
Let it be known, lest history be rewritten
Of the latest tragedies that twice shied us, burned and bitten:
A great force of nature -- no flood, typhoon, or quake --
A dragon razed our village, cursed a bloodline in its wake
Years later, he returned to stake a claim on what he’d made
We gave the child away; we were too afraid.
A decade forward: villains ventured to our village clandestine
The mighty malefactors set alight our forest and our kin
We fought and bled, the rivers ran red
Our Roost in roiling flames, ridden with ashen dead.
Both left us with scorched earth, the black sky,
The anguished cry, the question 'why?'
But there was no answer or amends
Naught left to do but begin again.
It obviously talks about what happened here in Angel’s Mirror. My question is, who is this child and where are they now?
Eventually we made our way back to the split tree that helped us into the Feywild, Carrie and Speaksleaf waiting for us so as to take us home to the Material Plane. They seemed pleased with our metal bootie haul, as well as the mushrooms Osborin and Taffeta had managed to collect. I think we managed to make a good impression on them and the people of Forestroost after all!
Much Love,
BB
