Where his story truly starts Gilbaron does not know.
His earliest memories were growing up in a tower, a monastery to the Warlock order of the All sniffing nose. It was a lonely childhood. He was never permitted to travel far out of the tower grounds.
His teachers, the clerics weren't cruel but they weren't very warm either. There was a great number of strict rules to follow, no running, no loud noises, multiple daily prayers that must be recited perfectly and rigorous study.
Recruits would study night and day. At the age of 4 Gilbaron began to notice two things;
That he was the only child here, other than him the youngest here were teens, 16 at the youngest.
And that he was not like them, he was shorter, his facial features more jagged with a long pointy noise. He eventually realised he was a gnome.
Cleric Whiffle was the kindest to him, taking him under his wing to help with his studies. In this order all recruits were to study the dark arts and after a certain time had passed they would be tested. Pass that test and you would be linked to the great power and would become a Warlock.
Cleric Whiffle convinced the high council to give Gilbaron more time due to his youth and natural disadvantage to dark magic.
Eventually at the age of 6 Gilbaron found the courage to ask the Cleric why he was the only child here and why he was so different.
The cleric told him that 6 years ago during a terrible storm, a storm that he claimed was a powerful omen a baby gnome was discovered at the monastery steps. This was surprising because this tower was up a mountain with dangerous terrain, unless you knew the secret safe passage. Knowledge of this monastery outside of the order was forbidden and yet here this baby was, with no sign of who left him.
This would weigh on Gilbaron for many years as Cleric Whiffle guided him through his studies. At the age of 12 he took the test,
a night alone in the top of the tower where dark and powerful spirits were kept trapped. If these spirits saw potential in you they would bless you with secret sights and knowledge, if not you would be turned out from the order.
To the suprise of everyone, mostly Gilbaron he passed. What exactly happened that night, what forces he spoke to or what pacts he may have made are lost like a fog in his memory. But following that he began to learn the magics of the order.
Years and years passed and Gilbaron lived a quiet life, never fully embraced or trusted by the other members of the order. And after Cleric Whiffle passed his one true friend was gone.
Eventually Gilbaron looked at his reflection and realised he was a tired old man. And his purpose in this place didn't seem clear. He would spend many nights neglecting his reading to look out the windows wondering about the outside world.
And then one night he dreamt, dreamt of a dark and powerful voice telling him
"Your destiny is out there."
He dreamt of the faces of a gnome couple a man and woman but their faces were obscured by shadows.
That was when he decided he had to leave. That he needed to find the answers to his past and maybe find his true purpose in this world.
He traveled for months not discovering anything, until he one day he found a portal shimmering in the air. Overwhelmed by curiosity he traveled through and that was when his new life began in Kantas!
