The Dragon in the South
I think I’m one step closer to finding my purpose in this place, this town that homes so many families, innocent and clueless people. It is for this reason that I stopped working on my book, written words are no good to protect people, the knowledge I hold is what I must focus on. Focus on using it and focus on gaining more. This tome, that in my mind had prospects of becoming a famous book, a retelling of countless adventures, will now be used as a book of secrets, a harbinger of the untold stories, a bastion of the tales that slowly erode in the back of our brains.
It will mainly serve the purpose of telling what hasn’t been told, keeping the pieces of information that no one else deemed worthy to share and hopefully be used as a weapon against the impending threats.
As for that I will start my scribbling with a tale not yet heard in Daring Heights… a story until now locked away in the minds of four adventurers: a talented musician equipped with a sly tongue and deft fingers, a cat burglar armed with pointy edges and quick feet, a burning pyre of a man armed with the arcane fire and the demonic lineage that courses through his veins and, of course, myself, a simple servant of Our Lady of Silver.
It was a bright summer day, nothing could possibly predict what was about to happen during the following days. We had heard about a certain shady gentleman that knew of the location of a hidden stash of gold somewhere to the southwest of Daring Heights and as we were, at the moment, concerned with our current financial status we jumped on the opportunity to buy this information from him not before exchanging a few harsh words with this character.
We promptly headed south through the swampy lands, avoided a rather unpleasant confrontation with a tribe of white lizardmen. Truth be said we did have to pay our way out of this situation but what are a few gold coins for the sake of avoiding unnecessary bloodshed?
After traversing the swamplands, we reached the place the map the shady character, Lux was is name as far as I recall, depicted. We quickly investigated a partially sunken tower, rested for the night in one of the little islands of this lakeside region and first thing in the morning we approached a little hut in one of the other islands. We were greeted by a young woman, who claimed to be living here to better attune with nature but the rouse quickly fell to pieces when after offering us a very peculiarly looking soup Rhy decided to investigate some noises coming from a closed cupboard that to everyone’s surprise held a legless goblin inside. The woman quickly transfigured into an old hag and proceeded to attack us. The numbers were on our side, 4 against 1, good odds I thought to myself. Little did I know she had a “pet”, I’m not even sure if you could call it a pet. A sentient tree proceeded to sprout its branches through the window and violently attack and pull me and Dorian alike to a big thorny gaping maw of some sorts. Most of us fell in battle that day, but thanks to everyone’s efforts we managed to survive by an inch of our lives.
The poor goblin that was held captive asked us to return him home and perhaps help his tribe with a little puzzle of sorts in exchange for passage to the other side of the lake where our treasure awaited. We did so, we helped solve a simple puzzle and in the process freed a gnome fellow which apparently Lux left behind, and fell in the good graces of the leader of the tribe, an old female goblin of unexpected wit and intelligence.
Before we left, a warning was given about another sentient tree that guarded the path to our final destination. This turned out to be a small problem, by sheer force of willpower and wits we managed to convince the tree to give us its blessing under the condition that we slayed an evil troll that inhabited a nearby cave.
Compared to the hag confrontation earlier, the troll was a walk in the park. Although none of us knew, having a fire spewing demonic blooded sorcerer in our group proved to be exactly what we needed to defeat the beast.
After this tiring journey, we finally had everything we needed to proceed and claim our well-deserved treasure. The cave where the treasure was said to be kept, was a simple stone cavern with 3 tunnels, in one we found a madman frantically scratching the wall to no avail. It seemed to not give us much importance so we slowly backed away and eventually got to the treasure room. As we were eagerly collecting the treasure, a rumbling started echoing from underneath a nearby water pool and in no time a fully grown Black Dragon sprouted from the mass of water and hurried at us with vicious intent. At this moment running was our only concern and we ran and ran and ran until we reached our boat, as we hurried to start sailing away, Darkroot, our newfound ally tree covered us with his roots and shielded us from the searching eyes of the dragon patrolling above.
And this my friends, was how we survived multiple near death experiences in the same week. And most important of all, our little White Dragon problem up north is not the only draconic trouble we need to care for. Be cautious, keep an eye out in the south lakeside regions for the Black Dragon should still patrol this area.
