Report #027
Objective:
Assist in locating missing Hunters. Missive posted by Norbert of the Frog Bog.
Team:
Veridian
Laurel
Melancholia (+ 3xZombie bodyguards)
Oliverio
Details:
Missive contained explicit instructions to meet a Guide outside the Florished Hook. Team assembled to meet the Guides, Kwaptarr and Digillian, two bullywugs very unfamiliar to the town. Kwaptarr only one of the two who could speak Common, obviously a language not normally known by the bullywugs.
Guides eager to leave, so Team followed into the Frog Bog via the Levison Farm. Journey difficult in the muddy terrain, took a few hours to reach the Bullywug Settlement and source of missive, Norbert.
Norbert, a halfling man in a tan suit and recent resident of the Bullywug Settlement, as had limited information on the hunters that had gone missing. So met with settlement’s leader, Taydern, a larger than life bullywug.
Taydarn informed that hunters had been missing for 8 days by this point. Team sceptical of likeliness finding these hunters alive if they had befallen an enemy out in the bog this long ago. Informed hunters were after a large fuzzy creature that can kill with its eye, unsure what this was specifically, but as is a coming of rite hunt it likely can fight back in good measure.
Digiliian gave us descriptions of missing hunters should we encounter them, and then led into bog to final spot that bullywugs had visual on their missing hunters.
Began scouting for tracks in sticky mud of the undergrowth as Laurel questioned the local wildlife, including asking Stripes for assistance with his nose. Oliverio prevented anyone from losing to the mud, especially Veridian who was occupied looking from the eyes of his magic owl Nyra up above the trees.
Bullywug trail was quickly located. Team led further into bog until I heard a distant whistling from 2 sources. Team stealthed closer to discover a Grung also stealthily scouting much like us. Grung seemed to be communicating via spinning a stick that created the pulsing whistling sound. Sound carried over a good distance and highly effective, wonder if they’d ever teach outsiders the method….
Team changed tactics to track this Grung in hopes they might lead us to missing Hunters. Tracking led to Grung encampment within the treetops, though I didn’t understand their language their tone of conversation implied disappointment. Whatever they had been scouting for had been a failure.
Team retreated from Grung encampment and convened. Decided that Laurel would use their magics to locate any nearby Bullywugs in hopes it might bring us towards something that non-magic locating couldn’t.
Followed magic to clearing with long overhanging canopy, many vines hanging down, and lone Bullywug sitting in its centre facing away from us. Many corpses littered floor, sourced from different creatures and humanoids.
Nyra approached to inspect condition of Bullywug and owl instantly attacked by them lashing out. Attack initiated an onslaught of the undead creatures, more emerging from the corpses on the ground and from the canopy above us.
When one of many waves wiped out, an even larger creature descended from the canopy, a stinking mass of bones and corpses mangled together with living tendrils of leafy growth.
Team converged on large Target. Combined use of sword edge, magic and bolts took it down. The remaining corpses also falling down into inaction. Target eliminated.
Able to find corpses of missing hunters amongst pile in clearing. Melancholia also finding and raising another zombie companion. She is amassing a significant personal guard these days. Laurel chatted with nearby trees to confirm presence of large beast had persisted there for several months now.
As Team left clearing I spotted a few of the Grung also retrieving their fallen after us. Perhaps this is what they were searching for. I thought it respectful to leave them alone to do this, so I kept what I saw to myself.
Hunter’s bodies returned home to Bullywug Settlement so they may rest in eternal peace. Taydern and the others pleased with the retrieval of their fallen companions and the speed at which we did it. Celebration invitation even extended to Team.
Conclusion:
Missing hunters located, though not found alive. Bullywugs glad we brought back bodies of their fallen. No major injuries suffered by team.
Mission successful.
