Report #024
Objective:
Assist Bones in finding and studying a magic orb lost in the tunnel system near the Turning Fields.
Possible connections between extra large turnips and creatures known as the Kruthik in the area.
Team:
Myself
Taz
Kalta
Jacinta
Heret
Bones
(Gravan, a wizard hired by same company as Heret. OMTC.)
Details:
Team dispatched from nearby town towards Turning Fields, once arrived greeted by the O’Sheehans family (consisting of Madeleine and Rahmina, and their son Theodanas). Bones and Heret had met them beforehand on a previous mission so team was easily welcomed into their home for turnip stew and information exchange concerning the orb.
O’Sheehans expressed concern that removal of orb would effect growth of their turnips and in turn their livelihood. It is agreed amongst team that if we found orb it would not be removed but instead studied on site and then further discussed with the town folk (note, not entire team seemed concerned with effects on O’Sheehans/Turning Fields livelihood).
Team stayed in barn overnight and approached tunnel system early next morning, team provisioned with Madeleine's homemade cooking before setting off. Directions to orb then provided by cryptic notes previously found by Bones and Heret.
Directions take us upstream and into tunnel system, tunnels oddly round and smooth so likely not naturally formed. Water of stream as we enter tunnel system discovered to have slight shine to it.
As team travels further into the tunnel system, Bones making a map to prevent us getting lost, Taz noticed a pair of glowing orange eyes hovering nearby and watching the team. Eyes make no attempt to attack and instead disappear into the darkness. Team continues on.
Further in, now stealthing, orange eyes seen again by Heret and again make no attempt to attack. Tunnel system now displaying more vegetation on the walls, starting as thick layers of moss and then evolving into plants and flowers as team goes further in. As vegetation starts to take on a jungle-like appearance in its density, that narrows the tunnel diameter a few feet, orange eyes once again spotted. I threw a lit rock near to them for us to decipher what this creature was which scared the eyes into the vegetation tunnel, only Kalta managed to catch more of its appearance, she said it was orange and fluffy. Team deduced it was likely a fox creature.
Team followed eyes through vegetation tunnel into large cavern covered in more vegetation and flowers, the stream still flowing through the middle of it. Flowers and plants present in this cavern seemed similar to ones we had all seen before and yet were very different to anything we knew of. They also all glowed.
Orb discovered to be wedged between rocks within the stream, its structure made of glass and containing a glowing yellow liquid that seemed to be very slowly leaking out through the hairline fractures of the orb and into the stream. Within this glass orb was another glass orb filled with glowing green liquid, this orb was not fractured but both the liquids seemed to be interacting with each other while not physically in contact (according to the more magically knowledgeable members of the team).
While Bones and Heret discussed information about the nature of the orb, myself, Kalta and Jacinta kept watch, we were approached by the creature that was watching us in the tunnels, who was indeed a fox. Though slightly different from a normal fox in that they were misty around the edges, able to rapidly blink around the room, and they could talk.
The fox asked us if we were trying to remove the orb, as they were aware that its magic was what was making everything grow big and different around here as well as what could make them talk.
At mention of orb magic Taz then drank water downstream of the orb, then rapidly had to lie down. Mentioned something about tasting colours.
Bones safely extracted a number of vials of the potent stream water.
As team continued to stay in the cavern around orb, the fox (now chosen to use the name Saffi as per Jacinta’s suggestion) grew steadily agitated, but remained friendly. Team eventually agreed to leave and help eliminate a Kruthik egg nest as suggested by Saffi. New side mission to eliminate the Kruthik targets.
Team snuck up on the hole in the ground further away containing the eggs, eggs and present Kruthik instantly annihilated with excess fire and pointy projectiles. Targets confidently eliminated.
As team leave tunnel system notice that potency of water collected had faded, collected flowers had also wilted and died.
Heret suggested that Saffi be introduced to nearby townsfolk so that they could inform the town if more Kruthik turn up or if something happens with the orb. Saffi and the O’Sheehans seemed happy with this arrangement after initial confusion.
Conclusion:
Mystery orb location discovered and more information extracted about it’s properties. Seems further investigation might be needed.
Residual numbers of Kruthik in tunnels eliminated. Possible more still present in tunnel system.
Livelihoods of residents of the Turning Fields not endangered.
Mission success.
