“...and so that’s the outline. Bring us together and make sure we have the combined strength and security to ensure that if Hell itself comes calling again, we’re even stronger than we were before.” Girelle bowed low before the assembled senators and took a step back, awaiting questions.
“K’ul Goran has just suffered its worst set of calamities in recorded history,” a grey-tufted minotaur stood up to say. Senator Eleanor Gutsmasher hadn’t warmed to Girelle the few times they had met, and that didn’t seem to have changed over the last year. “You propose this bizarre treaty to prepare us for something worse? Your Accords reek of fearmongering, and we’ve had enough of that in the last year to be puppeted like that again.”
The Dawnlands Ambassador winced at her words and the murmurs of approval from around the room, though he took quick note of who seemed to be agreeing. Ok, no one he didn’t expect. This conversation was mostly a formality anyway, laying the last brick of months of work on his part. He straightened and spoke again.
“Apologies Senator, from the perspective of the Dawnlands, we’ve been here but a few years and already seen this level of emergency, and so are very much preparing to face worse should it come.” He waved his hand, dismissing the statement. “However, the Dawnlands have nothing but respect for K’ul Goran and we certainly wouldn’t want to build a relationship on fear. Rather, we would like to build these Accords on hope. Hope that by promising peace with one another and with as many nations as possible, we can focus less on the mistrustful politics and power games, when we would rather flourish together.”
Another senator stood up, Alberon - good, Rhodes would have been too obvious a supporter, but Alberon was a little more towards the neutral side of the debate. “The Dawnlanders have proven themselves more than any other nation in Kantas, and in a fraction of the time,” he said. “I see no reason not to formalise the alliance we clearly already operate under, and if this document allows for more nations to join a larger organisation - well we’ll see what comes. It would be good to build better ties with Kundar - we have only good relations with them but have always kept them at a distance. The Dawnlands can be the bridge we need.”
Louder rumbling of approval followed those words. That was when Rhodes stood up, the minotaur Girelle had spent months working with to get these hammered out. “I think we’ve discussed this long enough. We know we need to vote today. Ambassador, if you’ll excuse us.”
Girelle bowed low again and left the room, tall heavy door closing behind him. It was out of his hands now. He just had to hope the votes fell their way.
He’d paced the corridor for nearly an hour before the doors swung open again, and the senators filed out. He stepped into a doorway just slightly out of sight to avoid most of them, then stepped out briskly towards Rhodes. The minotaur turned to see him approach, grinned and embraced him. “We’re in,” he said.
Ribs popping slightly in the hug, Rhodes sighed in relief. “Thank the gods.” He stepped back. “I’ll send word and we’ll make preparations for the signing ceremony in a few months time. We did it, Rhodes. Thank you.”
