Well. I finally confronted that Necromancer, the one who threatened to end me after I freed Phalange from the un-life of being a phylactery. My friends once again jumping to my aid even though I can’t seem to stop being in these sorts of situations, it’s something that I’m not sure I can ever get used to and yet I feel more relieved and grateful each time.
But before we even got to Kundar and the ball I must talk about the outfits that everyone had put together for the occasion! Sheryl had offered to put together something for me which I was very grateful for, I’ve made it very known that I don’t understand this dressing up fancy thing that people out here do. Turning up to her room at the Four Fair Winds I was presented with a wondrous orange pantsuit to put on with an assortment of flowers to adorn it. Chrysanthemums and cornflowers and dahlias and dusty miller…
(The list goes on with further explained points about the amazing qualities of each one in extreme detail. The text taking up at least 2 pages.)
Sheryl had really outdone herself. Of course I made sure that Phalange, Jasper and Blue didn't miss out and I fashioned some bow ties for Jasper and Phalange, while Blue enjoyed a more floral neck ruffle.
Sheryl herself was in a dress reminiscent of the more magical woods of bare trees I encountered not long after leaving home, Fae arriving in a flowing assortment of glittering white chiffon and shining metal. The boys had also gone all out, Ghesh in a well fitted red pinstripe suit, while Baine had gone for something more military in his usual colour choice of matte black (with updated flowers of course), Mace even donning a crisp tux lined in silver.
I must say, with us all gathered at Portal Plaza marveling at each other's outfits, I think I’m starting to understand the obsession with dressing up and dressing fancy. It really was quite fun, even if the reason was life threatening.
Aurelia even gave us a free teleport to Kundar with the promise of taking the Necrodancer down. Of course I promised, but Aurelia really has a thing against having to dance it seems. But once we were in Kundar we quickly made our way up the side of the valley the town is in and while we were walking Faye produced this interesting looking mirror. They said it could look at the past of someone, and that could be useful in trying to understand what this Necrodancer was able to do. So Faye looked into this mirror and saw things that I’m not sure would help us in a fight necessarily, but we do know he had a hatred for academics and liked to possess muscians? As we were walking Sheryl also mentioned that the weird timey changey magic that creature riding the dracolich did was something that liches and dragons only know much about. A warning to expect more of it then.
With warnings heard and information gathered we all finally made it to the ball, it’s location seemingly an art gallery with an upper floor serving as the entrance to the ball itself. As we all stepped up, getting ever closer to this showdown we noticed that we couldn’t help but all walk in time to each other and along to some invisible beat. Even my heart was thumping along, and concerningly slowing down when the music came to a lull, what would happen if it stopped all together?
After some shared concerned glances we pushed open the main doors and finally made it onto the entrance balcony that looked upon the dance floor, and more importantly the stage. And there he stood, at least I thought it was him for I had no clue what this Necrodancer was really meant to look like, a half-orc man commanding the stage as he shredded on a guitar spitting out green and blue flames. His hands moving lightning fast even when playing the slow songs for some reason. He was surrounded by his band, a 2-in-1 skeleton playing something, an undead ogre on the drums, and a goblin on the piano.
For a moment I thought he hadn’t even noticed us at first, but my goodness he had and went about introducing us as *esteemed guests* that would have the pleasure of not seeing the sun rise on a new day. So much for getting that dance in that Jasper wanted. As the kobold nobles on the dancefloor fled, others amongst them revealing their vampiric forms, Ghesh, Baine and Frankie leaped down off the balcony. Their many weapons and paws already swinging every which way. Sheryl astride Astra and Faye astride Elchior joined them soon after and the dancefloor became a sea of swirling magic between the flashing weapons. Mace and myself stayed behind on the balcony, I think we were both aware we would not last long in the battle on the dancefloor (I did make sure that Jasper made a shrubby retreat with Phalange in his branches).
Even though I thought my friends were doing an excellent enough job of distracting the Necrodancer to my presence at the back he really had it out for me, but I guess that’s what happens when you destroy a phylactery. One moment I was summoning my flower crown touched by the stars, the next I was a shark and drowning. Very painfully. I could smell the blood nearby, and it had me excited? Being a shark was a brief but weird form I must say.
Just as the air was really beginning to choke my new gills the magic suddenly faded, and I was able to look up across the dancefloor and see Faye land the final blow upon the Necrodancer. Our heartbeats finally falling out of sync with the dying music and musician.
Catching his eyes briefly I noticed he was looking wistfully up towards the rafters of the stage as he took his dying breaths, like he was watching a great opportunity escape. With the other’s help we found an iron receptacle up there, the perfect receptacle for a Soul Jar. I guess just killing me wasn’t enough, he also wanted to trap my soul it seems….
Well. He failed. Guess that’s what happens when you underestimate my friends and their fancy outfits!
I do think I won’t be destroying any more phylacteries any time soon. But I will always be glad I released Phalange from this Necrodancer, they can live a free life on the flower field for as long as they want now.
Much Love,
BB
