Report #020
Objective:
Surprise mission to assist in devil elimination in town named Bloody Creek. Team summoned by Merry, a villager who resides in the town
Team:
Myself
Ruthenia
Laurel
Jaezred
Cadfan
Alenea
Details:
Team (not yet assembled) were gathered in 3 Headed Ettin when Merry, a distressed woman, bursts into the tavern to rushedly deliver news that her village Bloody Creek was under attack. She implored that someone help them immediately before more people got hurt.
At this team gathered and quickly discussed rapid modes of transport to get there. Ruthenia, an elderly magic user, indicated her shadow horse and cart could transport a number of team members there. Laurel offered a ride on goat back, which I accepted.
Team was able to arrive at Bloody Creek within the hour.
Upon arrival noted a number of farm houses on fire and activity occurring at chapel near a orchard. Team converged on chapel to assess if villagers were present and needed assistance. On approach saw a number of armed villagers fighting a group of devils.
Team manage to eliminate a number of devils from a distance before they took down any villagers. Some devils ran away, despite Jaezred’s magical webs, in direction of what I suspected was a manor house. Alenea managed to eliminate one more retreating devil but one still escaped.
Talking to armed group, one being Father Johnathon he priest of the chapel, revealed that a number of the remaining folk were hiding out in the chapel, likely why devils had converged on this area of the village.
Inside the chapel Laurel and Ruthenia healed a number of the injured folk while rest of team discussed how to proceed with eliminating any remaining devil threats. Furthering questioning revealed that a number of children were missing, their last known location in the direction of the manor house I spotted earlier. These children included the twin boys, Leo and Bernard, of the owner of the manor, Lady Agnes. Third child, Tony, was ward of Father Johnathon.
Team discussed possible source of devil activity in area. Jaezred pointed out that woods in this area was known to contain rogue portals, while Alenea Cadfan and Laurel noted that some devils might be left over from Rift War.
Concluded that manor house would be searched for missing children first, and if no clues to devil’s source found there, then further sweep of area would be conducted.
Upon exiting chapel team stumbled upon Ruthenia successfully raising skeleton from grave on chapel grounds.
This sight was received with mixed reviews.
Team and temporary skeleton associate approach manor grounds. I scouted ahead to find a side door that can take us down to the basement, as well as other side doors onto the ground floor.
Decided to enter basement, as devilish activity has a higher chance of occurring there. Upon entering muffled noises are heard hidden behind some barrels, noise source is investigated and found to be a small child, Bernard. Though scared and unsure of the location of Tony and Leo, he does point out important information to team. Said he saw some of the devils come into the basement and then enter into the shelves nearby. Further investigation indeed revealed a hidden passageway behind the shelves.
Bernard is rehidden in a better spot and given a dagger to defend himself if needed.
Team enters passageway, a dark tunnel roughly hewn from stone. Some light spotted further in. Team stealthed further forward with the assistance of Laurel’s magics. Investigating source of light reveals a wider room containing more of the devils we had fought earlier, a more armoured devil, and arcane rune chalk drawings on the floor.
Team still had not been spotted. Attention of devils seemed focused on chalk drawings and trying to magically activate them un-successfully. Summoning something else?
Team ambushed the gathered devils while also making attempts to ruin the chalk drawings and render them useless. During ambush team was flanked by devil hiding in shadows of the tunnel. Armoured devil also magically summoned support but was quickly banished for this, along with the flanking devil. Remaining devils eliminated.
Once the magic users were satisfied that chalk runes (informed it was a teleportation circle) had been dealt with, team then swept the building. Found the remaining children Leo and Tony. No more traces of devils found.
All three children escorted back to the chapel. Townsfolk informed of elimination of devil threats. Also informed Lady Agnes and Father Johnathon of presence of now deactivated teleportation circle. Lady Agnes, though the owner of the manor, was unaware of the teleportation circle or secret passageway’s presence. She said it was likely a product of her late husband who was known to dabble in magics.
Conclusion:
Villagers of Bloody Creek prevented from further harm from the devils. Children successfully rescued. Devils and adapted teleportation circle eliminated. Mission success.
Be more wary of flanking enemies in future.
