- Harper field report from the new mission to the Kantas Expanse -
For the attention of Brightcandle Moonblade
I have arrived safely to begin my expedition in Kantas, and I am currently lodging in the Cavernous Seashank. As suspected, it wasn't long before adventure found me. Playing my part as the grizzled war veteran with little interest in appearing sociable, I was approached by an urchin boy, Billy, and his friend, a young halfling, named Idari or something similar. They were acting on behalf of one who was seemingly a young girl, but later was revealed to have been a lich. More disturbingly, her father, referred to as the Grey King, is a lich himself in operation within the vicinity Neverwinter.
He used the poor child to create his phylactery, and condemned her to a unlife, locked away in a tower for what we believe was at least a hundred years. Having managed to escape her father's torment, she made her way to Kantas, expecting it to be far enough to avoid her father's reach, not understanding the link they shared. Of course he sent successions of his henchman to seek the child out and recover her.
In the process of recruiting me, they also made the acquaintance of other adventurers. Take note of these names, as I suspect they may turn up again in mine and others future reports for one reason or another:
Blaze - a no nonsense fire genasi - a warrior after my own heart, though I suspect she is touched by the divine
Dillanthia - a forthright high elf monk
Veridian - a scholarly human mage of some considerable talent
Kilahpriest - a thoroughly unlikable man, who also appears to be touched by the divine, but has a darkness about him
As mentioned above, we were brought to this Sabrina, the young girl, to aid the child in finding some way of shielding her from her father's influence. It was through the events that followed that we learned of her true nature, although I suspected all was not as it seemed, as she smelled of decay despite her best efforts to cover it.
With the assistance of the local librarian Horrus, we learned that an amulet known as the Arcane Pulsar, may be just the trick to throwing her father off the child's scent. We were directed to two shops in the city, both of which I recommend we send our more magically inclined agents to for resupply. The first was Blue Soul Arcanum, owned by one Karlessa Highbringer - a human sorceress, and Ernetta Jund, a wizened human arcanist, at Petty Parchments and All Things Arcane. A shy and nervous soul, Karlessa provided us with the material components and recipe to make the amulet in return for a reasonable service rendered. Ernetta not only revealed the true nature of what we were dealing with, but performed the ritual required to assemble the components and make the amulet.
Things did not go exactly as planned, and it is likely that the Grey King is aware of our meddling as the enchantment triggered some kind of magical attack system, conjuring a shade of the lich who promptly attacked us all. Through valour in the face of such evil, my companions acquitted themselves well, and despite some injuries as well as a burned bookcase, we came through relatively unscathed and completed the ritual, having banished the shade back to whence it came.
By the time this missive reaches you, the next stage of this plan may well be underway, and I will update accordingly.
