Report #018
Objective: Investigate messages sent via floating objects from an individual trapped in the lighthouse.
Team:
Myself and Stripes
Zeena
Whistler
Melancholia
Laurel
Ankhet
Temp Team:
Felany and Herman
Details:
Team present in Cavenous Seashank during special event, this seemingly consisted of unique mug decorations and less lumpy beer.
During proceedings a kid slapped a wet note on the wall detailing a cry for help from someone in the lighthouse. Note mentions that ‘they’ have got in, but does not detail nature of ‘they’.
Kid said that note was found in bottle floating in harbor, suggests sender is trapped in lighthouse with limited capacity of communication to outside world.
After assessing nature of team, and preparing with Laurels goodberries, we proceeded to lighthouse premises.
Approaching lighthouse revealed more objects strew about with more notes attached, these all detailed same nature of distress and that food was running out for the individual. Team noted the main light was still on and that the main door was barred shut from the inside.
Melancholia noted 1st floor window above the door, used their bat familiar to scout upstairs. Found stairs going up and down, two doors at the back of the semi-circular room, and a unconscious body.
Remembering my newly acquired magic rope, team ascended to 1st floor window and entered the building through it.
Laurel immediately confirmed the person was deceased and had been so for several hours now. Nature of death was unusual in that they were heavily bruised, but fatal injuries were via drowning. A large blood trail lead to the stairs leading upwards.
Upon entering further into the room team noted that everything, including the structure of the room, was soaked through, the floorboards also heavily weakened.
Two doors investigated, one contained a converted bedroom containing come jars and personal effects. This included a small jar containing a snail labelled ‘Herman’. Other room contained stockpile of food rations, this was all also completely soaked through and likely spoiled.
Team moved upstairs, Whistler scouting ahead, encountered some difficulties with the weakened floorboards but made it up without incident. Upper floor consisted of the balcony that housed the main lighthouse fire, entire structure also soaked through but fire still burning. Up there was also a small cupboard under the stairs that was thoroughly sealed shut, doorhandle missing. The blood trail that lead from the body finished at the door to this cupboard.
Ankhet and Zeena (perched on her shoulder) enquired as to if there was anyone inside the cupboard. Upon doing so the voice of an distressed individual called out, and eventually unbarred the door to us. The individual was a elderly half-orc lady by the name of Felany, the keeper of the lighthouse. She seemed relieved to see us, and that Herman was okay (reunited by Melancholia) but kept asking if we had got rid of ‘them’.
Team confused at this questioning as we had not encountered any hostile creatures in the building. Then Whistler was suddenly engulfed by a large slimy tentacle with a face, the creature turning red as it hurt him.
Felany’s shouting revealed this to be the ‘they’ mentioned. Team quickly dispatched of this creature. Though Whistler did receive injuries from both the creature and my own bolt, more caution needed with piercing weapons.
After healing Whistler and Felany, we questioned Felany on what had happened here. She said the slime creatures emerged from the ground as she was leaving the lighthouse, they then proceeded to follow her inside and started flooding the building. Supposedly they can get through the smallest crack, hence the door she was hiding behind was sealed shut.
Further questioning didn’t reveal any object on her person that they might be after, or that she had encountered these creatures before.
She enquired about the well being of a man called Martin who was meant to come today to bring supplies to the lighthouse. This was likely the individual who was dead on the floor below.
Team decided to lie to Felany about Martin’s status of living, and Whistler, Ankhet and Zeena went downstairs to hide the body from Felany. Team them descended to ground floor, this level was flooded and filled with various furniture pieces blocking the door.
Laurel used their magic to swiftly and safely evacuate the water through a broken window while the rest of the team proceeded to clear the way of furniture.
During this more tentacle slimes emerged from the ceiling and behind the door to make attacks on the team, including Felany. Although some individuals were engulfed, it was not impossible to physically and magically remove them from the creatures so that the creatures could be obliterated without hurting others.
Creatures taken down, Felany surviving the final attack. Team escorted her from lighthouse successfully.
Myself and Laurel took Martin’s body to be resurrected at the nearby temple, I made sure to inform Felany of what had actually happened to Martin. Resurrection was also successful, he’s on track to make a full recovery.
Conclusion:
Messages successfully investigated. Felany, Herman and Martin successfully removed from situation in lighthouse. Creatures attacking the lighthouse eliminated.
Mission successful.
(Scribbled at the bottom of the report is an extra note, the hurried scrawl suggests it was added at the last minute before sending)
Yes Mum I’m doing okay, eating well and everything. You know I’m not good with writing ‘normal’ letters, but I guess I’ll make an effort for Dad next time if he wants one. Stripes is the dog I’m training, hoping they’ll be helpful with working for the Watch.
