Opening Theme:
The target, a recipe for a brew local to Za’Suul, Whispers of the Wind. Something you could sample in the city itself, or in Daring Heights if a good natured minotaur felt like taking it with them on a random trip to the town to share with the locals.
That had been how Cadfan had first sampled it, and now, he wanted it all for himself. At any cost.
A small crew was put together for the job, Jaezred, Cyclone, and Cadfan. They met up at Mask’s Meads and Other Momentus Brews, a business to all passerbys just looked like a humble microbrewery in the bad part of town, other people knew better.
A quick negotiation of contracts fees between the three and a jaunt over to the portal plaza and they were standing in Za’Suul.
It was all good they were in the city now, but they needed two things. The location of the brewery that produced Whisper of the Wind, and disguises. No need to have this particular robbery traced back to Cadfan, he'd already had a taste of that during the casino heist back in Daring.
Ducking around a corner, and a flick of hand, Cadfan emerged as an older looking elf gentleman in fine robes and a monocle. “Randal Randalson son of Randal, from… New Hillborrow?” That wasn’t Daring. Would make tracking anything back to him harder, New Hillborrow would just have to deal with any potential mess the three of them may leave behind in Zul’Goran.
Jaezred followed suit and donned the moniker of ‘Jei'zon Fey-Branche.’ Cyclone seemed uncomfortable with the idea, so Jazred and Cadfan settled on Tornado, Typhoon, Monsoon… Actually they may have never settled on an alias for Cyclone.
A cheeky pint in the pub was the thing they needed to obtain the location of the brewery behind Whispers of the Wind.
With their new faces and new names they entered the brewery as a trio of prospective contractors for some unspecified brewery venture, coincidentally enough, that’s exactly what the owner of the brewery, Psitras, was looking for.
Apparently there was some election coming up in the city and Psitras was looking to win it without issue. The problem though was that this businessman had a seedy past. An unwitting ally of the Vanguard during that whole devilish crisis a few months past. Maybe this brewer deserved to lose their secret recipe after all. A safe glinted in the corner of the office, there it was. The housing for the secret receipt of the Whispers of the Wind.
Psitras was having some issue with some local gang led by a minotaur called Cleaver, apparently he wanted to extort Psitras using the information about his involvement with the devil cult.
That's why the trio were useful, he planned to publicly denounce cleaver and his attempts at extortion in public, which Psitras believed would lead to the brewery being burnt down at night. He wanted the trio to.... break in to the brewery at night, to offer some sort of secrecy to the situation, and defend the brewery from the gang. He may have well been literally asking Cadfan to rob him blind.
They agreed, but Cadfan had no intention of completing this new job they had been offered. The safe still glinted in the corner of his eye.
Night came. The trio hid in beer barrels and were transported to the top floor of the brewery where they waited until night fell and the employees went home.
Cadfan just needed to grab the recipe from the office and get out of there. But as they made their way to the staircase to get back to the ground floor, they found a woman working overnight on the other side of the door to the stairwell, between them and the staircase.
Apparently this person was Cyclone’s mother who she was reluctant to meet, but her mother wasn’t going to budge on her own, and they needed a distraction to slip by her, so Cadfan knocked the door and he and Jaezred horribly attempted to hide behind some boxes as Cyclone had a heart to heart with her mother.
That done, and Cyclone’s mother out of the way as she was convinced to head home, the trio made it downstairs to find a gang of minotaurs chucking oil all over the building in an attempt to set fire to the place. It looked like Psitras’s hunch had been right.
Cadfan helped Jaezred and Cyclone defeat the minotaurs that blocked his way into the office, but as soon as the way was clear he sprinted into the room and started cracking open the safe while the others continued their jolly fight to the death with the gang.
After about twelve seconds, the safe swung open. Success. But there were stacks of paper and vials of unidentifiable liquids in there. Cadfan didn’t have time to check them all, so he took everything, scooping all the bottles and paper up into his bag. Done. Now it was time to check up on the others and get out of there.
It appeared that Cyclone and Cleaver had come to some understanding during the twelve seconds which didn’t involve more bodies lying on the ground. If he was given proof that Psitras was very aware of the fact that he had been working with the Vanguard and had intentionally done so, then he would let us go and not burn down the brewery.
That evidence didn’t exist though. So Cadfan ran upstairs under the pretense of grabbing said evidence, used a spell, and brought back an illusionary scroll containing forged evidence that would condemn Psitras. It also helped that if Psitras was in prison that would make it a lot harder to come after Cadfan, no, actually it would be Randal Randalson son of Randal from New Hillborrow they would come looking for when a copycat version of Whispers of the Wind started popping up in the Dawnlands.
Cleaver bought the ruse. Success. The bad part, apparently this line of events would just lead to Cleaver being in charge of the brewery and Cleaver seemed like the kind of person who probably shouldn’t own a brewery that could help fund their criminal enterprise.
So while everyone was distracted finalising the deal and leaving the building, Cadfan snuck back to where all the oil Cleaver had brought was and set fire to it himself, making sure that no one would be able to keep the brewery, whatever the outcome of these political shenanigans.
Did it also help that this would now mean that Cadfan was the sole supplier of Whisper of the Wind? Maybe.
The trio emerged from the brewery as it burnt down behind them. Target acquired, identities obscured, beers drank.
All in a day's work.
Now Cadfan just needed a new name for his knock off brew, ‘Murmurs of the Mountain?’
