~Rules of a Field Trip~
“Alright, Scouts. Today is a very important day. We’re going on our very first field trip.” Jacinta surveys the array of tiny, excited faces. “Who can tell me the rules for today?” About a dozen tiny hands shoot into the air. Jacinta calls on an excited gnome boy. “Go ahead, Orryn.”
Orryn’s face becomes a bit nervous. He looks around at the other scouts for reassurance. His friends give him encouraging pats on the shoulders. His chest puffing up with confidence, he proudly proclaims “Rule number one: don’t touch anything unless the flower lady says so!”
An indulgent smile spreads on Jacinta’s face. “Very good, Orryn! We must remember to listen to BB, these are her flowers after all. And she gaves us special instructions to stay safe while we explore. Who can tell me the next rule?” More hands begin waving in the air. “Yes, Thea?”
A little Halfling girl stands at attention and recites “Rule number two: stay with your group and scout leader.”
“Excellent, Thea!” Jacinta gives her a thumbs up. “I want everyone to stand behind their scout leaders.” With so many new camp counsellors volunteering, worries of adequate supervision practically melted away. 5 scouts form a huddle around Veridian. The three youngest scouts stand near Alia and Hackniss. The remaining scouts clamber over to Jacinta and Selkie.
“Great job, Dragon Scouts! Finally, what’s the most important rule of any field trip?”
“Have Fun!” and with that, they take off.
~The Flower Lady Cometh~
Alia and Hackniss lead a small group of children through BB’s magnificent field. The youngest, and smallest, of the scouts clings to Alia’s back. Rollo pointed a little finger at an extremely purple patch of flowers.
“What are those, scout master?” Rollo asks, tugging at Alia’s sleeve.
“Hmm, I’m not sure, Rollo.” Alia responds, setting the little boy down gently. “Do you know who we should ask?”
All the scouts shout “The Flower lady!”
Her blue fur shining in the sun, BB walks amongst her flower beds. As she carefully tends her Spiderblooms, Hackniss suddenly appears, tugging at her arm.
“Hi, Flower lady-I mean, Miss BB.” She hangs her head at her slip up. With her new role as scout leader in training, Hackniss want to make sure she sounds really grown up.
At the name, BB laughs, not unkindly. “Flower lady is perfect. Or just BB. How can I help you, little scout?”
Hackniss points at her little group in the field. “We found a pretty patch of purple flowers, but we don’t know what they are. Can you help us?”
“Oh, absolutely! Lead the way, little dragon.” Hackniss gingerly takes BB’s hand, leading her to the group of scouts. BB towers over the group of young Gnomes and Halfings. Seeing this, she leans down as several pairs of eyes focus on her.
BB looks carefully at the patch of flowers, a bittersweet smile gracing her face. “Well, it seems you lot have found my very special forget-me-nots.”
Rollo inches closes to BB and takes her hand. “What’s a forget-me-not, Flower Lady?” BB sits on the ground, the scouts following suit. Rollo decides he’d very much like to sit on the nice lady’s lap and places himself on her knee.
“Well, a forget-me-not is a flower we plant or give away when we want to remember something.” BB explains to the group.
Hackniss pipes up “What are you trying to remember?”
Alia smiles at Hackniss and pats her on the shoulder. “They’re not to remember something. They’re here so we don’t forget anything important. In remembrance.”
“Exactly, Alia. Why don’t I tell you all about why I planted these flowers.” BB says, her dulcet tone already lulling the scouts into a state of reverence. “You see, when I was adventuring in the Feywild, I saw a beautiful purple plant. It was so beautiful, I knew I had to bring it back to my flower field. But when I tried to plant my own, it just wouldn’t grow. I spent months and months trying to get it to grow. Then I learned the secret.” At this, all of the young scouts lean in. Even Alia looked riveted. “You see, the secret to growing an Even Bloom is to plant it in purple Fey soil and give it a bit of encouragement. I used to sit by the bloom and play my horn. Unfortunately, I needed a potion to grant me the power to see everything, even things that are invisible.”
Hackniss sits ups. “Wait, BB. How can you see invisible things if they’re invisible?”
“It’s called Truesight. And the Even Bloom can grant the power of truesight if it is made into a potion. My special plant served a special purpose, but I do miss it. So I planted these forget-me-nots so I would always remember the love and dedication I put into the Even Bloom.”
“Miss flower Lady, I’m sorry your flower got hurted.” Rollo pats BB on the arm, using his other hand to wipe away a stray tear from his cheek. “Can we do something special for you flower? Maybe if we play some music for it, your flower will hear from flower heaven.”
The scouts all jump and cheer at this idea. They link hands while singing childish ditties and spinning in circles. Alia and BB watch on with indulgent smiles on their faces.
~A Spider in the Rough~
Crouching over plentiful white blooms, Veridian continues his description of the wonderous yarrow flower.
“This is a very special plant. Should you young scouts ever find yourself wounded after battle, or scraped up after a nasty fall from a tree, you can make a poultice out of yarrow.”
Orryn raises his hand, looking nervous to interrupt. “Mr. Scout master, Sir?”
“Yes, just a moment. You see, yarrow can be an excellent pain reliever.”
“Scout master-”
“Your parents might use a bit of Yarrow, If they have a headache.”
Finally, Orryn stands up an points at Veridian’s face. “Spiders! You’ve got spiders on your head!”
Veridian wipes a hand down the side of his face. Looking at his hands, he sees three small spiders making their way up his arm. As he tries to shake them on the ground, he sees that the is standing in a patch of purple blooms. Nestled amongst the flowers is a wooden sign that reads: Spiderblooms. Sure enough, every purple flower is covered in tiny spiders, some of which have begun to climb up Veridian’s legs.
“Alright, everyone stay calm. Stay so calm.” Veridian feels a spider making it’s way up his bare leg. “Okay run, everyone run away from the spiders!”
The children giggle as their little legs run after their flailing scout master.
~You Can Dance if You Wanna~
Jacinta watches as Selkie ushers the little scouts along the path. This transition could have been painful, but Selkie seems to be thoroughly enjoying the new responsibility. And new friends.
As Jacinta surveys the scene, she sees her most rebellious little scout standing away from his group. As she moves closer, she can see the Kasz is standing in front of a bush with pretty pink flowers, wiggling.
“What are you up to, buddy?” She asks, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“Scout master, this bush is dancin’ with me! I thought is was the wind, but I think it’s really copying me!” Kasz practically yells with excitement. He wiggles his little arms in the air and sure enough, the bush follows suit.
“This dancing is quite a bit of fun, but I would prefer some accompaniment.”
Kasz stops moving and stares deeply at the bush. “Mr. Bush, did you just talk?”
The bush is still for only a moment. “Well, young master, I am a Shrub, not a bush. And you may call me Jasper.”
Kasz gasps and wiggles excitedly. “A talking shrub!” He looks over and shouts to the rest of his group “Come over here, I found a talking Shrub. His name is Jasper and he likes to dance!” The rest of the scouts scamper over, Selkie following warily behind.
Each little scout walks over and introduces themselves, shaking hands with the awakened shrub. “Well, now that we have the pleasantries out of the way, I’d say it’s time to dance.” Jasper turned towards Jacinta, somehow managing an imperious look on his leafy face. “Some accompaniment if you would please, scout master.”
Jacinta takes out her pan flute, slightly shaking with restrained laughter. She plays a little ditty, some song from her childhood. Visions of a childhood spent exploring the purple hills, swimming on the coast with her sister, and dancing carefree in the forests. Just as the scouts, lead by a bemused Jasper, dance across the field of flowers.
