The dappled sunlight was warm on his fur as this very odd day draws on. The gentle breeze through the trees carries the distant sound of giggling as the newest addition to New Hillborough settles in with new friends. This had been his first trip out in quite some time and he felt it was suitably adrenaline filled to require several days of aggressive relaxation back at the Thirsty Dragon. It would be nice to finally have some new stories for Oscar as well. Beranwald seems to think on this for a long moment as he looks out from his perch in the tree before continuing with his conversation
“IT REALLY IS RATHER HEARTENING THEY MANAGED TO COME TO SUCH AN AMENABLE AGREEMENT IN THE END. THE CHILDREN WERE A VERY INDEPENDENT BUNCH AND I WAS CONCERNED THEIR PARENTS HOLD THEM BACK... I’M ACTUALLY IMPRESSED HOW WELL THEY WERE MANAGING OUT THERE, TRUTH BE TOLD!”
A loud panting and shuffling indicates he still has his companions attention
“OF COURSE, WE DIDN’T THINK IT WAS WISE TO MENTION THE WHOLE, INTERPLANAR DOORWAY TO OBLIVION SITUATION... BUT BESIDES THAT THEY WERE A VERY RESOURCEFUL GROUP. MANAGED TO OPEN THAT PORTAL THEMSELVES… I THINK WITH THE RIGHT ENCOURAGEMENT THEY VERY WOULD COULD BECOME A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH”
More shuffling emanates from below. Beranwald lets out a long sigh as he surveys the surrounding area, his gaze drifting from the idyllic town and over the expanse of fields and forest that can be seen up Stoneway.
“YOU KNOW, I ONLY ACTUALLY CAME THIS FAR OUT OF TOWN TO SEE HOW CHIRPER AND GOOSE HISS WERE DOING…. CHIR-PER. CHIRRRPERRRR! Oh never mind…”
He shuffles in place, getting more comfortable on his chosen branch. It wasn’t the warm blanket near the Hearth he had asked Pervinca for of course but he still enjoyed having an uninterrupted view of the area from this height. A small brown bird lands on the branch just in front of him and he feels his muscles tighten and shift, every fibre of his being wanting to pounce. This time, at least, he manages to catch himself and remain in place. It was a long 30 seconds or so he guessed before the bird flew off again, chirruping a cheerful call as it went and he could finally relax.
A whine catches his attention again
“I FEEL LIKE WE MAYBE GOT OFF ON THE WRONG FOOT OLD SPORT. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT THE NORMAL SOCIAL EXPECTATIONS COULD BE AVERTED FROM TIME TO TIME AND WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO MEET IN A MORE AGREEABLE FASHION THAN THIS. MAYBE A LITTLE CLOSER SO I DON’T NEED TO SHOUT SO MUCH?”
Beranwald looks down to see his tan coloured companion with the white feet was still eagerly poised at the base of the tree, tail wagging with supreme excitement that no other form of communication could quite articulate with such vivid clarity.
“NO, I DIDN’T THINK YOU WOULD REALLY BE UP FOR THAT APPROACH AT ALL. STILL, IT’S WORTH A TRY I SUPPOSE”
He trails off and looks around again. The scouts seemed to be out of ear shot from here. Most of the townsfolk were likely already at The Hearth and Road so they wouldn’t be much help. The Cat and Badger was closer but it was still a little early for the younger crowd to be showing up there. And Chirper and Goose Hiss generally kept a little further out of town still.
His thoughts are cut off again by another excited yip from below
“Very well… I SAY, THIS IS NORMALLY THE KIND OF MOMENT I’D SHARE WITH OSCAR BUT I GUESS YOU’LL HAVE TO DO… SOCKS WAS IT?”
He gets a short and simple response back as expected. It's honestly a wonder no one has heard all the shouting and barking by now
“GRAND, AND WELL MET. BERANDWALD BY THE WAY. VON GRIMBURN, THOUGH MOST JUST CALL ME GREEBO THESE DAYS”
A much deeper bark this time, somewhat closer to an Arf than the Yip's he's had so far.
“CLOSE ENOUGH! ANYWAY, IT TURNS OUT, WITH ALL THAT NONSENSE A WHILE BACK WITH THE WAR IN THE HELLS -”
Socks responds with a loud whining bark again
“YES, THAT ONE! WELL, THEY MANAGED TO BRING BACK A FEW DJINN CHILDREN WITH THEM AND LEFT THEM AT THE ORPHANAGE IN DARING HEIGHTS. TODAY THEY ANNOUNCED THEY HAD MANAGED TO FIND THE PARENTS OF MOST OF THEM AND TASKED OUR SMALL GROUP WITH WITH BABYSITTING THEM UNTIL THEY ARRIVED.”
He looks down to see Socks attentively sitting at the base of the tree, panting heavily with his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth
“OF COURSE, BEING FOUR MAGICAL CHILDREN, IT QUICKLY BECAME CLEAR THAT THEY HAD MANAGED TO SNEAK OFF - “
