Missing Persons Case
Victim: Kylon Terthia, Priest of Bahamut, deceased
Perpetrator: Vareka, Kobold Vampire Spawn, deceased
28 Flamerule, 1497

Attached to the front of the case files is a note written in a different hand to the rest of the file
Requested: Investigative team to discover whereabouts and safety of local priest of Bahamut. Payment upon retrieval of subject or evidence of their whereabouts.
Enquire with Nia Cramm-Pard, Temple of Bahamut, Kundar.

The main bulk of the report is made up of several pages of writing. Towards the end the writing grows less neat.
Kylon Terthia, a priest of Bahamut from the city of Kundar, was reported missing by his friend Nia Cramm-Pard.
The investigative team consisting of myself (Kyra Marsh), Hawthorn Nether, Wyst Ballowan, Sundilar the Arcane, and Veridian Pentaghast reported to the Three-Headed Ettin in the city of Daring Heights where we were informed that our transport to the city of Kundar had been paid for by the temple of Bahamut.
Upon arrival in the city of Kundar myself and the rest of the investigative team travelled by foot to the temple of Bahamut where we located the client, Nia Cramm-Pard.
Questioning of Ms. Cramm-Pard revealed that Kylon Terthia is a green kobold of average build, last seen three days ago heading to a nearby infirmary for his usual rounds. He was wearing the white robes of a priest of Bahamut and he can be identified by his bone ring featuring an eagle motif.
Nia informed us that she did not know of any enemies Kylon may have.
Upon arrival at the infirmary we were able to question the employees and locate a visitation chart directing us to the last patient Kylon visited. This patient revealed that Kylon seemed normal when leaving his room and was heading to the morgue.
In the basement of the infirmary we located a morgue staffed by three morticians, Nout, Vareka, and Torai.
Nout, a tall thin orc, and Vareka, a short Kobold, informed us that Kylon did visit several days ago though they did not recall why. Veraka's answered seemed calculated and he informed us that Kylon left via the back door which leads to an alley behind the building.
During inspection of the morgue for indications as to why Kylon may have visited Sundilar was able to locate a dried blood spatter indicating a violent struggle. The angle of the spatter, coupled with its height, showed that the victim was approximately the height of Kylon. Upon this discovery Sundilar informed myself and the rest of the team of what he had found. Based upon this I performed an extrasensory sweep of the room for the presence of evil. During this I detected a strong sense of the undead coming from Vareka.
Vareka, noticing my disquiet attempted to leave before he could be confronted. After a brief struggle between myself, the kobold and a door in which I was overpowered Vareka was restrained by Veridian via magical means.
Unfortunately the suspect Vareka was unable to be brought to justice and was instead slain by the combined efforts of the investigative team, a separate analysis and justification for our actions is attached.
During the altercation Veridian Pentaghast was bitten by the creature. This proved to have no long term implications for the wizard.
Prior to his death Vareka declared himself to be working for an unspecified "master" who he was gathering victims for. Further information on this master was not forthcoming.
Upon death the undead creature disintegrated into ash. Samples of this ash were collected by the arcane inclined members of the party for reasons unknown.
Whilst myself and the rest of the team secured the room and informed hospital management of the vampire living in their morgue Wyst Ballowan ventured to the alley the morticians had previously directed us towards. Upon return he presented Kylon's ring as prove that he had found our victim.
I retrieved Kylon's corpse and together we returned the body to the temple of Bahamut so he may be dealt with as his faith requires.
Kylon's ring was lost during the journey back to the temple.

An Analysis of the attempted apprehension of Vareka
The kobold known as Vareka was discovered having infiltrated the morgue of a Kundar infirmary. Upon discovery I and the rest of the team present attempted to apprehend the creature. Unfortunately the creature displayed strength and dexterity far in excess of a Kobold of its size.
When attacked with non-magical weaponry the creature proved resistant, attacks that ordinarily would have cut deep instead glancing off and only causing shallow wounds.
The creature did not prove to be resistant to magical attacks, for example the scorching rays of Veridian Pentaghast and the magic missiles of Sundilar proved capable of inflicting great damage upon the creature.
During the assault I was able to determine that a combination of imbuing my sword with divine energy along with the further power of my thunderous and divine smites were capable of launching a kobold of average size at least ten feet. This may prove useful for other small adversaries.
This divine and thunderous energy proved capable of cleaving the creature in two.
During the intervention the creature revealed itself capable of drawing blood from the neck of an unwilling victim. The non-permanent nature of this attack indicated that this was not a full vampire but instead a vampire spawn. This was cemented by the creature revealing itself to be working on behalf of a master who desired further victims.
During apprehension I provided the creature two opportunities to surrender, once upon our initial arrest attempt and a second part way through combat. Both pleas were refused and the creature continued its assault.
This refusal provided justification for summary execution. I regret my inability to bring this criminal to justice.

A small piece of paper is included with details of payment
Payment for the investigative teams services was agreed upon at 100 gold pieces for evidence of Kylon's fate. An extra 50 gold pieces was agreed if he was found alive. Unspecific trinkets were also promised. Transport to and from Kundar was paid for by the client.
With his body returned we were paid the initially agreed 100 gold pieces along with the 50 gold bonus due to the circumstances of Kylon's demise. Along with a pair of lesser healing potions were distributed amongst the group.
I was personally presented with a platinum embedded shield emblazoned with the crest of Bahamut. Upon return to Port Ffirst this shield was sold for a further 50 gold pieces.
In total the proceeds of this case for myself were 80 gold pieces.

A copy of a letter is included in the file
To the leader of the Kundar guard,
I am writing to inform you that myself and several of my compatriots were recently hired to investigate a missing persons case within Kundar. A priest of Bahamut, Kylon Terthia, was reported missing by his friend Nia Cramm-Pard. Unfortunately, the conclusion of the case revealed that Kylon was the victim of a vampire spawn named Vareka who was operating out of a morgue at one of your city's fine infirmaries.
Please be aware that the creature in question revealed itself to have a master operating within your city. I fear that a far greater evil than what we discovered is still present in Kundar. Please take all precautions when dealing with this issue.
Attached to this letter you can find my report on our investigation.
A copy of this letter and my report has also been sent to the chief guards of Daring Heights and Port Ffirst.
Regards,
Kyra Marsh
