Report #016
Objective:
Assist the Daring Heights Watch in a Man Hunt.
Assist the main city Watch in concluding multiple missives on their new crime notice board.
Team:
Myself and Stripes
Alenea and her raven familiar
Avalan
Jacinta
Ziarae and her imp familiar Crow
(Temp Team Members) Hackness and her pet dog Socks
Details:
Initially asked to assist with a manhunt, upon arrival to the Watch headquarters we were informed that this mission was null as the individual was already detained in the cells.
Were then asked to assist with a number of missives posted on a notice board, a cluster of locally reported issues and crimes, as well as deal with the ruckus that had started in the square in front of the building.
Upon team exiting the building, met with sight of angered red dragonborn chasing a small figure through the crowds. Part of this angered chase involved throwing rocks through the crowd, team managed to distract and persuade him to stop and explain. Questioning him revealed him to be extremely inebriated, so sent him home to sleep it off.
Returning to mission of solving the missives, team first went with missive complaining about construction noises in alley behind Butchers Avenue, upon arrival we found a roughly built small wooden shack. Myself, Jacinta and Alenea approached stealthily only to find no one inside, only two small beds made of scraps. Jacinta and Alenea also found a toolbox, this was likely the one mentioned in another missive that reported of stolen tools.
Team then went to address of missive about stolen tools, premises were wood crafting shop of Robin. She confirmed the toolbox was indeed hers.
Began further questioning on details of nature of theft.
She said she didn’t see the looters fully, just two little feet disappearing through her broken window. Investigating the ground between the window and site of stolen tools, I was able to discern footprints of small humanoid and potentially a dog. Jacinta confirmed this, also noted something off about the dog prints.
Team noted we also had a missive for a missing dog, perhaps these instances were linked. We approached address on this missive to find tired human woman who was confused at being woken up and at the missive itself. Alena was strangely suspicious of the woman and the fact she had been asleep during the day. She said she had no dog, and had not posted the missive herself, she did mention there was a child who liked to hang out and play with their dog a lot nearby.
Shortly after Jacinta noticed a small shape watching us from down the street. Team quickly pursues, only for figure to disappear through a fence. Using Ziarae’s voice volume altering magics we were able to convince them that we meant no harm and that we only wanted to talk.
The figure did show themselves and we were met by a young Gnomish girl who had been living on the streets for some time in the shack we had found earlier, she went by the name Hackness.
The missive for the missing dog had been posted by her, said her dog (Socks) had been missing since that morning. Hackness also admitted to us that she and Socks had been responsible for stealing food from people’s houses and that Socks was the one who kept teleporting into places.
Hackness only gave us this formation if we promised to help her take Socks to a good shelter for him that was out of town. Myself and the team were adamant on fulfilling this promise.
Hackness’ confessions also solved the other missives we had on us. The last task related to these missives was to find Socks.
Hackness informed us Socks was likely chasing after the ‘red man’ who he liked to try and get food from. Her information on his location was merely the ‘big tavern’.
Team concluded that this tavern was likely the Ettin and the red dragonborn that we had encountered outside the Watch building earlier that day.
Team (including Hackness) went to Ettin, learned from Coll that red man was called Seth, that Seth was terrified of dogs, and Seth’s room location. Hackness was then safely relocated to a table in the Ettin with food money and Stripes.
I scaled the outside wall to access the room’s window, rest of team went to the door. All exits were covered.
Upon reaching window I discovered that a dog, likely Socks due to the white ‘socks’ on his front paws, was in the room rummaging through a bag. Seth was also in there, but passed out in his bed.
Unlocked window to retrieve Socks at same time rest of team knocked on the door. This awoke Seth, who proceeded to grow extremely agitated at the sight of Socks in his room. I made a dive for the dog to restrain him as the others worked on unlocking the door.
Once whole team in room, Jacinta made quick work of physically restraining Seth while Ziarae magically restrained him. Alenea attempted peaceful negotiations with Seth, but this failed. So Avalan proceeded to physically knock Seth out.
Myself and Jacinta worked on convincing Socks to follow us downstairs to Hackness, shortly followed by Aleana and Ziarae. Avalan eventually also joining after being successful in their task. Our activities did not cause alarm with the Ettin’s occupants.
Hackness confirmed the dog was Socks, then gave more information on the shelter she had heard about, it was in a small folk town nearby. I had heard of this place before and Coll knew where it was, so team escorted Hackness and Socks there as promised.
On arrival in the town, asked owner of local tavern (Pervinca at the Hearth and Road) if she knew the location of the animal shelter. She confirmed its location, said it was run by two folk named Chirper and Goosehiss.
Team escorted Hackness and Socks to the shelter, and after confirming with Chirper that they were okay to look after a ‘blink’ dog (information offered by Alenea), we gave Hackness time to say goodbye to Socks.
Not happy with leaving Hackness alone and on the streets again, we convinced Pervinca to take her in. Hackness was happy to have a home where she could see Socks again.
Conclusion:
Solved majority of missives we were handed by the Watch. Events all seemed linked to Hackness’ and Socks’ activities in some way. Mission successful.
Hackness and Socks both found good homes. Bonus success.
Wren is sitting against a tree that borders the town of New Hillborrow, Stripes snuffling at the grass nearby as they try to hide a silver piece in the earth. Wren proceeds to fold up their written report and stow it away safely in a pouch on their belt before looking out at the peaceful town that lays before them.
Further down the tree line, making quite a din, is a small group of halfling and gnome children gathering around Jacinta, Hackness included. Wren hears excited shouts coming from the kids, something about Dragon Scouts, which makes Jacinta frown slightly. Wren can’t help but smile.
Quietly, so only Stripes can hear them, they say “If only we could stay here, like really stay here. I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed being away from the urban bustle”
There’s only snuffling from Stripes as they continue to investigate the grass. Wren glances back to the group of children, now paying rapt attention to Jacinta as she gives them a lesson on tree climbing.
“Hackness is happy here, that’s the main thing from today. But she shouldn’t have been on the streets in the first place, living off scraps. My mission is far from over.”
They pause before standing up, brushing the grass off their trousers.
“Anyway Stripes, you wouldn’t be happy if we stayed, there’s definitely less shinies for you to snaffle up in a leafy green place like this.”
Wren smirks down at Stripes who is now back to playing with the silver piece they tried to hide in the grass.
“You know you’re gonna have to give that back right? We don’t steal from good people.”
Stripes looks up at the mention of their name, and seeing Wren’s attention focused on the silver piece in their paws they immediately try to hide it from sight. Wren chuckles before proceeding to make a game out of chasing Stripes through the grass, laughing the whole time.
