Hi all,
I'm Peter/Pete - happy to answer to any of them :-)
Safe bet that I'm the oldest player in the group having already broken the 50 barrier but, like many others, I've only been playing D&D since joining you all this year - and I'm really enjoying it. I've been a tabletop miniatures gamer for decades but, apart from a dabble with Traveller back in the 80s, this is my first real foray into RPGs. I count myself fortunate to have stumbled across such a friendly and thriving D&D group and am particularly grateful to Andy for his gentle and understanding DM'ing in the first few sessions as I got on my "feet". anyway, enough babbling about me and onto....
GRIMES
Modelled on a combination of my favourite character from the Discworld series, Clint Eastwood and Alan Rickman.
About 40 years old, 5'11'' tall, lean but not overly muscled. Very short brown hair, pale skin with permanently narrowed greenish eyes and "crows feet". Quiet, introverted, tough, stubborn and self-critical.
The only indication of a rare moment of mirth will be an upward twitch of one corner of his mouth.
Grimes served in the City Watch of Casterbridge (a wealthy city near the coast) and reached the rank of Master Sergeant through a combination of determination, stubbornness, hard work, honesty and bravery. Despite his best efforts it was impossible to fight the rampant corruption permeating down from the ruling "nobles" into all forms of government and business. In his years trying to protect the people he saw too many innocent people and good officers cut down (often deliberately targeted) or worse - corrupted.
His strict moral code and unwillingness to be "flexible" in his approach to the ruling classes and organized criminal elements made him a marked man and he would have had to resign and walk away anyway had it not been for some terrible event which resulted in him leaving the city in the dead of night with a contract on his head and dark vengeance in his heart.
It seems Grimes has come though the portal to Kantas to buy some time and draw breath before embarking on a possibly self-destructive mission of vengeance. He appears to take little pleasure from adventuring (although he always fully commits to any crisis or combat situation) and uses the gold he earns to keep comfortable private lodgings and equip himself with weapons, armour and experience for whatever his future holds.
He is obviously slow to trust (judges people by their actions not words) and slower to make friends and prefers to take a moment to carefully assess any situation rather than rushing in headlong.
He finds it hard to turn a blind eye to some of the dubious activities in Daring Heights (especially as he is well aware a lot of his fellow adventurers have criminal backgrounds) but he will only intervene when officially on Guard duty or if an innocent needs protection.
"Grimes didn't like the phrase 'The innocent have nothing to fear', believing that the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty, but in the longer term even more from those who say things like 'The innocent have nothing to fear'." Respect to Sir Terry Pratchett RIP.
