“B-e-f-i-t-i-n-g” - “Very good Billy, but ’befitting’ is spelled with two t’s.” - “but ‘fit’ only has one t in it?” - “yes, but the second t is there to show the change of tempus. ...Just go with it.”
It is a sunny day in Port Ffirst. Whatever trouble had befallen the neighboring lands of K’ul Goran have thankfully largely bypassed the settler-towns of Kantas, and life is returning to normal.
“Mr Mace! I got my alphabat right! No mistakes!!” - “Very good Susie. One candy for you! Now practise them backward. And it’s ‘AlphabEt’.”
The library of Port Ffirst is busier than usual. Horrus, the dragonborn librarian, has been offering literacy classes for all comers, and Menace has herded the collected urchins to the house of letters to get them started with their lessons. Whatever the outcome of the war - these kids would need an education.
“They are taking to it quickly. We will need to organise math classes soon.” Carl muses, as he hands Mace a number of missives. The apprentice has come a long way - urchin no more, he now manages the pawnshop almost single-handedly when the boss is out on business.
“Excellent. Maybe you can make a start of it? I think practical examples are best - calculating to make change for gold coins when merchants buy a a few crabs. That will keep them focused. Try to build it in during story time.” Mace winks at his former apprentice; the boy has grown into a proper young lad.
“Sure. I think the we can put some of the older ones to work soon? We are still hiring, right?” Carl shuffles the papers into his messenger bag, taking back the approved ones marked with a folded corner.
“Always.” Menace nods. The children are the future. It was not that long ago that he had been one of the dirty-faced children vying for attention and food. But he had been given a chance, and he was determined to do the same for these kids. For better or worse, these children were his responsibility; his family.
“Make sure to take them all to the Seashank after the lessons today for their bowl of chowder. I have to see if Horrus needs anything else for the library. And keep it going for the following weeks, you hear? I want all of these kids to learn how to read and write.” Mace pauses for a moment, his eyes taking on a faraway look.
“This is important.”
