The winds of K’ul Goran were wild and turbulent, which was perfect for Khazifa Onyxdepth as she soared across the landscape, pinwheeling and diving as the air currents directed. She caught an updraft and sailed high up, so that the landscape below was little more than a vague impression even to her raptor eyes. The air was so thin it seemed the boundary to the Plane of Air was a tangible thing, her claws reflexively grasped out trying to grab hold of that ephemeral veil that barely separated the two planes. Her eyes, meanwhile, remained trained on the far away earth, scanning every inch of land she could see.
Who needs maps when you can see the world? she thought, not for the first time.
The armies of K’ul Goran were on the move again - orderly blocks of people marching down the road towards the centre of the country where the rift was slowly widening. The devilish forces could only march a few smaller devils through at a time at the moment, and so the constant barrage of arrows and magic from those Gorani forces already present was slowing them down. The imps were a pain, but their normal sneak ambushes wouldn’t be very effective against the robust minotaur soldiers. Air Genasi might be more vulnerable, perhaps. Still, enough were getting through that the horde was growing, and that growth would only accelerate.
From the north another force was incoming, Khazifa’s eyes could just see - a group of several hundred from the land of the Gotresham heading towards the growing conflict as well. Interesting, and not a group Khazifa knew very well. She tried not to hang out in other druidic circles too much. They were always so damn mystical.
Now for a different perspective.
With a screech, she cast an invisibility spell over herself, vanishing into the very thin air. A few seconds later, a small flash was the only sign of her shifting planes.
The air of Avernus was always hot, so Khazifa had no trouble staying aloft. The plane was a big place (infinite one might say, if one was a nerd), but she had made sure to arrive near the heart of Zariel’s power, and so it didn’t take long to find what she was looking for. The armies were gathering - hundreds, thousands of devils and fiends in perfect formation, marching from across the wastelands of Avernus towards the glowing circle in the air - a portal to the Prime Material slowly gaining strength.
They weren’t already gathered? Surprising, but Zariel isn’t one to tip her hand too soon by summoning forces before absolutely necessary. I suppose she can't leave the frontlines weakened for longer than absolutely necessary. Thank the Roots the young ones got one of those seals tucked away - if that portal were opening any faster they'd have been overrun already.
She soared across the gathering hordes, letting her senses flit between the physical, the ethereal, and the supernatural trying to detect anything that could help. Suddenly, Khazifa was nearly startled out of the sky as one of her spells connected with something.
Elementals? Dafuq?
