Team:

(See previous reports for team's descriptors)
Details:
Team escortedto Za’Suul via the Wavedancer with Gulliver, the ship’s new first mate. On arrival met by Leonetta Silkhair, chairperson of the merchant guild.
Note taken of stronger naval and military presence in city.
Team briefed by Leonetta on current investigations to uncover a Vanguard operative. Also informed us of the current tensions around the empty Magistrate seat, and that she would be announcing her candidacy for the local elections at the parade tomorrow.
Team went to magistrate’s palace to talk to the Admiral about the current Vanguard investigation.
Met with Admiral Antonios Warborn, Head Scribe Lufd Windswept, and Commodore Lyra Ironhide within the same office. Admiral shared with us clues retrieved from current investigations.
Clues mentioned individuals by descriptors rather than names, exception being the Warden. This included interactions between a tabaxi mechant, a minotaur, a female aarakocra, and air genasi.
Note, though they were asking for our help the group within the office was reluctant to share much other information with our team.
Augustine cast a truth spell over the group and team in the office, all answered that they were not part of the Vanguard. Apart from Commodore Ironhide, who refused to answer questions from ‘outsiders’ and vacated the room.
I followed the Commodore to her office, while the team stayed behind to decipher the clues given to us.
Conversing with the Commodore relieved some suspicion on her, but she was still a possible suspect.
Returned to Admiral’s office to assist team in deciphering the clues, we struggled with the information given to us, could not give the Admiral a definite answer on who we suspected as the Vanguard agent.
Left office to talk with Leonetta again to retrieve more information related to clues. This conversation still left us uncertain on the suspect, possible red herring by talking to her.
Team retired for evening, plan was now to escort Leonetta in the parade tomorrow.
Next morning awoke to information that Commodore Lyra had been arrested overnight at palace.
Plan changed, G’Lorth remained with Leonetta in parade, rest of team went to palace to converse with Commodore Ironhide in her cell.
She informed us that the Admiral’s men had arrested her, but had presented no evidence. Also informed us that she was main security agent for parade, and that it’s weak point for an attack would be as it approached the main square.
Team rushed to rejoin parade before it approached main square, but we were too late. Arrived to find Leonetta’s charred body from one of the many fireballs set upon the parade. G’Lorth scaled building that magic had originated from, discovered Vanguard mask.
Rejoined Admiral in his office, Jaezred was able to confirm Admiral was wearing a garb of abjuration magic origin. An item that would possibly allow him to evade truth magic.
This information, the clues and his inaction in presenting evidence for Commodore Ironhide’s arrest gave team sudden realisation that he was main suspect for being the Vanguard agent, the Warden.
Admiral announced city was now under martial law.
Team escorted out of city and onto the Wavedancer, arriving back home.
Conclusion:
Suspect found in Admiral Antonios Warborn, no solid evidence gathered.
Commodore Lyra Ironhide arrested.
Coastal cityZa’Suul under martial law.
Leonetta Silkhair deceased.
Failure to eliminate Vanguard threat/operative.
That evening, report written and tucked away in a safe place, Wren tries to get an early night. But it’s kinda hard to sleep peacefully after the events that transpired, so they spend the time scowling at the ceiling above their bunk instead.
At some point sleep does finally come to them. Their eyes closing to the darkness of the room, and in the next moment seemingly open to a place of light. Thick white mist envelopes the endless space, back lit by golden light that occasionally spills through the gaps. It’s reminiscent of early morning sunlight on a cloudy day.
Wren, unphased by their sudden arrival in this place, slowly walks through the mists that surround them. Bare feet padding softly against the smooth white stone floor, the lights beyond the mists never getting closer or further as they walk.
Eventually they arrive into a space where the mists have receded slightly, and come face to face with their guide. They stand there in full white plate armor detailed in some pearlescent material, one hand resting on the large sword at their side, their copper skin glows with an inner light that makes the space somehow even brighter.
Though the mists around them move and shift, the feathers on the magnificent wings that emerge out from behind them don’t react to the subtle currents. The only thing that gives away that this being is in fact not a statue are their eyes, like glowing liquid gold, which follow Wren’s movements with a burning intensity.
As Wren gets closer their angelic features shift to a thunderous expression of disappointment, and it takes Wren everything to not look at the floor and avoid their gaze.
“I’m sorry Myllandra. I know I’ve disappointed you.”
Myllandra’s face does not shift, eyes still focused on Wren. Instead of a response the visions come, snapshots of scenes from the past. Leonetta’s body, charred and alone in the middle of the street. The tide of panic and chaos as citizens flee the carnage. Wren pointing a loaded crossbow at the Admiral in a room full of guards. The whole group, including Wren, being escorted away as the Admiral watches on.
Each scene is an onslaught into Wren’s mind, like the memories are being burnt onto the inside of their skull.
“I know! I know I could’ve done better. I let my emotions cloud my judgement, I acted stupidly.”
Wren clenches the fists hanging at their sides, nails digging into their palms, as another onslaught of visions hits them.
Fleeting scenes of the countless threats they’ve eliminated over the years, including more recent endeavors. And then the scenes change to a different tone, slower now. Snapshots of the cityfolk from home, as well as here in Kantas, of the many faces they’ve encountered from their duties.
“I’ll do better, I’ll do better for them. I haven’t forgotten my goal”
Myllandra’s face calms from the storm of disappointment it was before into something more neutral. Seemingly pleased with Wren’s answer, they give a single slow nod as the surrounding mist rushes into the space to engulf them both.
Wren looks down at their hands as the mist reaches them, looking to the divine light that’s starting to spill out from within. It builds in brightness, spreading throughout their body, the shadow of their skeleton becoming visible as the light begins to char their skin.
The pain is immense, but these visitations always end this way, and Wren has started to become used to it.
They give one last glance up towards where the towering figure of Myllandra should be, but two orbs of golden light are all that pierce through the thick mists. Then the light spilling out from within finally overwhelms Wren all at once, and in the next moment they are staring at the grimy ceiling of the dorm room.
Wren gives one slow measured sigh before pulling the blanket over their head. The last thing they need right now is to wake the others and deal with their grumpy attitudes. Hopefully the light spilling from their eyes will settle down by the morning.
