Dear Thea,
Things are heating up around here. (Then again, when aren't they?)
Spent the last few days helping the Shunned out - that community in K'ul Goran who may or may not have "been there first" and lost a war and got driven underground for it. They're "monstrous" or whatever, so it's all drow, goblins, hobgoblins, orcs and what have you. They're living literally underground in different parts of K'ul Goran, fighting and raiding and trying to claim land. I don't know enough to tell you if there's a good side and a bad side in that mess - most likely, there isn't.
We all have a bigger problem right now though. There's a cult (of course there's a cult) called The Vanguard and they're looking for all these Seals, the ones from when K'ul Goran was at war with the Giants. They've taken to infiltrating basically everything they can. They're popping up in cities in KG, in Shunned communities, you name it. Varis is certain they're in our parts as well. He's taken to interrogating people under magic to make sure people are who they say they are. I'd call him paranoid but I don't think it counts when people are actually out to get you, so.
(He's getting better. He's by no means well, but he's getting there. The job has given him a focus, which is good. He's less brittle. Still quiet, still closed off, but not as distant. It's frustrating though. He won't talk. The only times I see glimpses of Actual Varis is when he gets angry. Doesn't leave me with many options but it's okay. I can take it, and Angry Varis is way better than Scared Varis.)
But yeah, we went over to hang with the Shunned. Probably shouldn't put in writing exactly where we went or too much about what happened in case this gets lost (God, he's rubbing off on me), but we helped them smoke out one of the cultists. Since we're Dawnlanders we could get up in their business without mucking up their ranks too much. Found one who was pretty high up on the food chain. She was also one of the fastest fuckers I've ever fought in my life - faster than Paw and Markas even. We found her out eventually, fought her and handed her over. I took a solid beating for the first time a while. Was pretty fun.
Pieni helped establish some good relations. (He's not very keen on the K'ul Goranians because a bunch of minotaurs razed his village a long time ago, which means he's got beef with like all minotaurs ever. Sunday and I tried to talk to him about it way back when, but he's not very open to the concept of Not All Minotaurs.) Traav did some good sneaking and some very good shooting. BB took a lot of notes and found a cool flower, I think.
I got to hang out with some orcs when it was all done. They weren't too friendly cause I was an outsider and also half-human (how's that for a twist?!) but the kids were cool. Got to speak Orc with them, which shouldn't have been very hard since they was kids but.. well. I don't really use it do I? I should find someone in Daring to give me lessons. (Kamar doesn't speak, like in general, otherwise I'd ask her.)
Anyway. I'm gonna go bother Varis into sparring. Write you soon.
All my love,
Baine
