“Do you have any idea what that thing does? Do you know what you might have just done?” Baine’s loud voice is a horrible blend of anger, fear and disappointment as it fills the bell tent.
BB hiccups and lets out one final, pink bubble as her speech returns.
“No, not exactly but-”
“And that’s my point, BB! We don’t know what any of this shit does and what these people are trying to do, you can’t just go grabbing things- what the fuck are you laughing at, Ghesh?”
The usually tall dragonborn is bent over trying to contain his laughter. Traavor is biting his lip very hard. There is an awkward silence in BB’s bell tent. Baine turns around to Markas who looks equally confused for a split second before he sees Baine’s forehead. His eyes go wide and he lets out a snorting laugh. Sunday exits the tent, whistling innocently.
The irate half-orc glares at his best friend.
“Yeah, laugh it up mate, you’ve got one too.”
Markas stops laughing.
Once he’s got the dick drawing off of his forehead, Baine has calmed down a little.
The rest of the party has trickled off, or flown off with his girlfriend on her giant eLk, but Baine and Frankie stayed behind for a moment. The setting spring sun is hardly warm but it settles him anyway.
Next to him, BB’s tall form folds down onto the grass.
“Sorry about that,” he says, “I wasn’t fair on you. Shouldn’t have yelled.”
BB settles down cross legged with her hands in her lap, the marks on her wrists still glowing.
“It’s okay, I know you did it because you care Baine.” She turns to face him at this point, “But you know that I wouldn’t release it right? The One Serpent. No matter how tempting Teoshi’s offer.”
He turns to look at her fully, his eyes sad.
“Remember how I told you ‘no more deals’? We made a deal, you and I, to not make any deals, didn’t we?” He looks back out over the flowers, one hand creeping up to fiddle with the sunflower pendant handing over his heart, glinting in the setting sun.
“And then Varis died. And the very first thing I did was run to Te’Zeer and try to make a deal. Desperation makes people do things they never thought they would. Ugly things, horrible things. I believe you when you say you won’t do it, I really do. I guess I’m just worried you’re gonna find yourself in a position where you feel like you have no choice.”
Frankie comes creeping over, attuned as ever to Baine’s mood, and drapes himself across both their laps with all the grace and gravitas that 95 pounds of fur can manage.
“If you’re ever in that position, BB, promise you won’t make the same mistake I did. Remember that you have friends and that we want to help.” He sinks his hand deep into Frankie’s fur and smiles. “Even this idiot. He’ll help too.”
BB laughs quietly at that, looking down at Frankie and giving him the belly rubs he deserves before speaking again “I like to think we made a promise more than anything, not a deal. We could do without hearing that word for a bit.”
“And I know now you have my back, and I have a family in all of you, a powerful family to boot.” She chuckles again at that, “It just, just took me a while to realise you know? Got so hung up on trying to get back to my old one that I didn’t even entertain the idea that you could find a new one.”
Baine gives her a knowing smile, a warm look of recognition in his eyes.
“I can promise like you want, Baine, but I don’t even know what’s ahead of us to prepare for, what position I could end up in. I keep looking for answers and getting more questions.” BB absentmindedly scratches at the new marks on her wrists as she says this. Baine gently grasps her wrist and squints at the silvery outline before shaking his head and letting go.
“Something else talked to me as we left that temple, whatever god was beyond the unstable pool. Supposedly I had its ‘sign’ for the explicit reason of releasing it. But what concerned me, confused me the most, was that I recognised that voice. I’ve been thinking real hard about it but I can’t place why or how I do. But I do.”
BB exasperatedly puts her hands up as she continues, “I just don’t know what to think of anything anymore!”
“Mate, I wish I knew what to tell you. I’m not the biggest thinker in Kantas.”
He sits quietly for a moment however, attempting to do just that. BB patiently waits by putting her hands back to petting Frankie.
“Just because you recognize something doesn’t mean it’s a good thing. Be ready for that. Something happened to your family, didn’t it? You don’t like fire very much. You don’t have to tell me. But maybe that voice had something to do with it. It might be offering you answers because it was the cause? I dunno.” He shrugs, his armor clanking a little. BB gives a little nod back.
“No matter what happens though? Don’t go it alone. Stay with your new family. Your tribe. Even if something threatens us. Even if you think you’re protecting us.” He rolls his eyes at himself and scoffs a little. “Even when we get mind-whammied and start yelling. I gotta start doing like, pushups or something, but for my brain. This shit is getting ridiculous. But that’s not the point, sorry.”
He pokes Frankie until the massive hound lumbers off of their laps and gets to his feet, holding out a hand and pulling BB’s slender frame up alongside him.
“The point is, no matter what happens, we want to be there at your side and help you make the best of it, especially if things don’t turn out the way you hoped. And if things need smashing. I really want to help you with that.”
He grins at her. The flowers in his crown, grown by her right here in New Hillborrow, are almost blood red and golden in the light of the sunset and his eyes are bright and reassuring.
“I’ve got to head back. Gotta report to the boss. You gonna be alright?”
BB looks to the side at the flower field as Baine stands in front of it in the afternoon light, at her home, takes it all in for a brief moment.
“Yeah. Yeah I think I’ll be fine. Thanks Baine. And you know, if you need help in any way or with brain push ups or whatever, you know where to find me. It’s the least I could do”
At this she gives a big and happy smile, one that finally reaches her eyes, she draws Baine into a hearty hug, armor clanking and flowers falling from overstuffed pockets in the process.
“And I will talk about what happened in my past, just give me some more time.”
Stepping backwards out of the hug BB nods her head towards the other side of the flower field while still smiling.
“Now go on then, before it gets dark. I wouldn’t want to keep you from Varis.”
With that Baine nods and leaves, waving back at BB once he gets to the edge of the field as Frankie runs large excited circles around him.
Watching Baine walk into the distance, BB whispers to herself in slight marvel,
“How did I get so lucky.”
