Their return to Daring Heights was a lot more straightforward than their journey to the plain of air. Sheryl was finding it very useful knowing of all these contacts across various locations - something she would never have dreamed she’d had if she’d stayed at the Summer Court her entire life.
I really am going to miss being here.
Markas’ concern over how they completed their mission wasn’t putting a dampener on her mood, despite how much she knows he must be overthinking what they’ve done. First being deputised by the local constabulary – Well, to be fair, that was only Markas and G’lorth. It didn’t include myself, Bones or BB. – then finding out it was Bel’lal who had an ongoing feud with Issin the Honest, the very djinn the two of them were asked to investigate for Joyeuse.
I rather liked how that interaction had turned out, Sheryl thinks, smugly.
When the group of them had walked into the Joyous Zephyr, Markas had clocked right away who the djinn was. It took Sheryl a moment longer but that wasn’t going to stop her. When you’ve grown up in the fey courts you know how not to show any weakness. The moment you do, you lose.
I thought Markas was going to have a heart attack by the way he was reacting!
Her confidence won out and her words convinced Bel’lal to give them the airship and crew they needed in order to give chase to Issin’s ship, The Thunderstorm. Turns out they had just missed him departing when they arrived at the Sky Harbour in Acca. Luck only bends so far in her direction sometimes. But Bel’lal, despite at first looking like he might want to squash her beneath his proverbial magical boot, reluctantly agreed to help her and her friends and ended up turning into a tentative ally and future contact.
“You have surprised me, and that does not happen often. Maybe you would want join me and my crew of Free Traders?” Bel’lal had offered to her and the others.
Sheryl had been tempted. Oh how she had been. But even now, as she and Markas were making their way to the Gilded Mirror to discuss and make sure they have the information down properly to report to Joyeuse, she hears a voice on the wind, calling her home...
