It took the best part of an hour but Beranwald was finally out in the open again. The Cavernous Seashank is a raucous mess of adventurer’s, fishermen and dock workers as usual tonight and a few of the regulars who know him couldn’t help themselves as they pick him up and make cooing noises at him. He had very vocally complained and demanded to be let go but people only seem to find it all the more endearing.
Still, he was glad to be back in familiar territory again.
It doesn’t take long for him to work his way up to the roof and find Oscar perched on the edge of the roof as usual, passing Euric excitedly chasing a stray leaf on the way.
“You would not believe the week I’ve had! Days walking in the woods for naught.”
A moment of silence passes as Oscar looks to his new rooftop companion before returning his gaze back out over the empty street.
“The fact that we were paid is not the point. The whole thing turned out to be a wild Goose chase… I knew I was right to be suspicious of that fellow.”
….
“Where are my manners, of course. Well, as you are aware, I decided to head back to Daring Heights and found myself accompanying a small party hired to protect a merchant following rumours of treasure in some hidden mountain. It seemed a little suspect but everyone was keen to go along so I decided to make some use for myself and join them, of course. Besides, Leek, A rather tall specimen, seemed to have taken a shine to me and-”
“Mraow”
The pair turn, almost synchronised to see Euric now spreadeagled on his back trying to swat at the leaf gently dancing in the wind above him. A little flustered, Beranwald turns back. “Well, so what if I was!? Leek seemed happy and…. It’s not the worst thing to have your belly scratched from time to time….”
Oscar remains silent and begins cleaning himself.
He glares at Oscar for a moment. “Anyway! Leeks friend was also very interesting. Another of similar descent as I so I-”
“mew”
Beranwald turns to see Euric has lost the leaf and is now instead on the hunt for new prey. Namely, himself.
He sighs as he turns back to the street. “Really?”
There is a slight ruffling of his fur as he continues, aware of the ever encroaching Euric behind him.
“We were hired by Tor-” Right at this point, Euric pounces, sailing through the air on a collision course with Beranwald when suddenly, without warning, Beranwald vanishes with a small pop. Instead of expertly catching his prey, Euric crashes into the roof and slides, scrabbling for purchase against his own momentum before it sends him careening over the edge. Oscar leans over the edge watching his excitable friend fall as another pop sounds behind him scaring him onto his feet only to see Beranwald is back, still talking
“-to look for this ‘lost treasure’ of his. Seemed quite keen to avoid drawing the attention of those ‘adventurer types’ like he had a personal grudge against them. He honestly thought bringing all the extra gear was-”
Pop.
Oscar flinches but looks back over the edge where a new commotion is beginning. Euric, had landed behind one of the barrels by the door and didn’t seem to be hurt. Unfortunately he had disturbed Juno who had been hiding there herself and was now being chased back down the street.

“-til the wagon broke and we had to convince him to leave it behind. He was not especially happy with that development but the lure of adventure seemed to be enough to keep him going. Long enough to remove any possibility of going back and bringing it with us at any rate. It was several days into the trip that we finally felt like we were getting close to this mysterious mountain when we were set upon by a pack of wolves. Ghastly beasts, led by a rather large one at that. I must say, the group performed-”
Pop
Oscar, unsettled by this new development begins to edge his way across the roof when another pop, much closer makes him jump again.
“-was holding off the large wolf on their own. We would have been in trouble had they not been there. Meanwhile, I decided to help Wren and we soon put down the large-”
“MRAAAAOW”
“What? OH!, Sorry dear friend… The short version is, There was no treasure. Only an old mans foolish dreams of adventure. Still, maybe he can be content now he has his own story to tell.”
Oscar stares intently at Beranwald for a few seconds before seeming to relax a little.
“I already said I’m sorry. It was only to stop Euric being a-”
Pop
Oscar, finally having enough, bolts across the roof. A few seconds later, there is another pop as a frustrated Beranwald reappears, looking as annoyed as his feline features would allow.
