"Family Ties"
I feel for Baine. He’s getting his stuff together now so thought I’d jot this down while I could.
It’s been a pretty shitty week, still reeling from the events in K’ul Goran and I’ve been staying in Daring, sparring with him most days trying to relieve some tension. Most of the time I’m still coming off the worse of course. While I was recovering from our last round of combat, the OCF had a visitor, someone called Taffeta came by and was talking about Sunday. I missed most of the conversation but it seemed pretty tense between her and Varis. Baine was trying to explain the situation as best he could but my head was still ringing from the beating he just gave me. What i could get though was there was some concern about Sunday and this contract they’ve entered into. I don’t know all the ins and outs of it all but it doesn’t sound good. Maybe when some of this mess blows over I will try to see if I can help in anyway, I don’t like to see them like this.
When Taffeta left, Baine surprised us by asking Varis to make it official about joining the OCF, taking a vow, speaking an oath. I'm glad he’s found somewhere he feels like he belongs. V is pretty serious about it all of course but it looks like they are doing good and Baine has grown a lot since he came here. I hope everything that's happened now doesn't undo that.
The next day, I tagged along with the two of them out into the mountains. Varis was looking at finding some resources and has apparently been looking into the Orc Clans out there. Pieni came along too and when we reached the gates,w e bumped into Heret heading the same way so he joined us.
We spent a few days out there until we came upon a ruined Orc camp. They had been attacked by the bodies partially eaten. It was honestly quite sad to see. This was the start of things for Baine. I don’t know if they knew them but the fact they were Orcs and had been killed like this resonated with him. We found the tracks of the killers leading off into the mountains and talked about following but I suggested we had an agenda already rather than following this through. Varis agreed and we set off only to have our plans immediately changed. On the the cliff side outside the camp someone had painted Varis’ name in blood. Any suggestion of leaving them now was gone.
We tailed them into the following day and finally came to a small valley where we encountered a small pack of Gnolls that had surrounded us, with a black shadowy figure that looked exactly like Varis. We split up immediately, Heret and Pieni taking one side while I focused on the other ridge, leaving Baine in the valley mopping up those that got through with Varis in the air fighting Shadow Varis. I missed most of the battle in the centre being surrounded by the Gnolls but the glimpses I saw had Varis in a bitter fight with the shadow which then split into two connected forms, the second now looking like Baine
Then Baine screamed something out loud, the fighting coming to a stop. Even the Gnolls looked confused as we looked on. He was talking to the shadow which had violently begun to shake and twist. Then, it vanished, leaving behind a desiccated body and a ghostly image of a female Orc.
It was his mum.
She had dabbled in Prophecy and had seen some great enemy that would be the undoing of her son, leading to her leaving him and coming to Kantas years ago. She had been involved in a lot of shady stuff, including the sacking of Daring Heights. All in order to kill this enemy to her son she had seen in prophecy. The enemy only yesterday Baine had swore allegiance to; Varis.
In their own way, they had been driving each other to do awful things, Baines Mum killing so many in the sack of Daring Heights, Varis slaughtering so many Orcs in defence of the city but I think she finally managed to find peace in seeing Baine. The whole thing is pretty messy and has really done a number on him. He didn't talk much on the way back apart from arranging a proper burial for her. Then as soon as we got back, he announced he was leaving and asked me to go with him. Of course I said yes, I’m waiting in the yard now for him to come back with his gear but….
I just hope this doesn’t ruin him.
