As the party re-emerges into the Ettin, seeing no sign of Khazifa on their return, BB moves to the nearest and driest table. Getting out her journal she gets started on her writing, occasionally interjecting into the surrounding conversation as they wait for Khazifa.
I learnt a lot of new things and saw some new things this week, some of which I’m not sure I want to see again.
This time some help was requested from someone named Khazifa, a middle-aged Dwarven women who met Baine, Ghesh, Traavor, Pieni, Taffeta, and I in the Ettin. Taffeta is a Halfling lady who is really really good with a bow and magic, and seemed to know Khazifa. Khazifa seemed really knowledgeable about the world, she picked up on my ‘chaos magic’ straight away without me having to cast anything, I’ve not had that happen before.
So Khazifa wanted us to go to the Shadowfell to get a magical glowing golden cylinder from one of the outposts there. Supposedly some of her old friends need it to construct a device to destroy a Grimm Thresher that’s giving them troubles and is trying to end the world. Sure. But I was certain it was going to be harder than how she made it out to be, these adventures never go smoothly I’ve found. So off we go to the teleportation circle! Khazifa had sorted something out with Aurelia, who seemed on good form, and we were sent on our way.
We arrived on a large grey mountainside somewhere in the Shadowfell, and my bloomin’ goodness I have forgotten just how sad and draining it was. Traavor nearly gave up and sat down right then and there, but we all managed to motivate him to keep going. Pieni did his flying and scouting and found a grey light next to a large skull and bones nearby, and as Khazifa said it was meant to be nearby and obvious we went towards it.
Once closer we realised the outpost was actually the large humanoid skull (several stories large) which was surrounded by it’s spine as some sort of wall and guarded by many skeletons. The glow Pieni picked up on was coming from a large crystal that was hovering above the ground just in front of the skull.
Before we could get much closer we kinda alerted all the skeletons who then jumped and grabbed onto the vertebrate of the spine, which then started slithering and burrowing at rapid speed towards us. It had no head, just a stump where the vertebrate ended, it was way too creepy for me. As I managed to shake myself out of my creeped out trance Taffeta and Traavor were already shooting at the spine and skeletons riding it. The arrows made all sorts of odd sounds when they ricocheted off the spines. As it turned towards Ghesh and Baine who were screaming as they ran towards it with weapons out, the spine perfectly lined up right in front of me. So I released a large lightning bolt right down its long vertebrate, it felt unusual for me to so much damage on something. I went invisible to reassess what’s happening while now covered in slime, only to turn around and see more arrows flying, Ghesh still screaming, Baine splitting the spine in two, and Pieni summoning these big fluffy cats. Underneath this onslaught the spine crumbles to dust and the skeletons that were riding it soon fall to the same fate. We stopped to have an important break and pet the cats, Sugar and Spice, before we approached the outpost.
Once at the skull/outpost (luckily no more skeletons to be seen) we had a closer look at the grey glowing crystal. I managed to magically identify it before Taffeta nearly destroyed it with one of her arrows. Something to note was the spears the skeletons were holding had a grey glow around them that matched this crystal. Either way, my spell showed it was called the Ennui of Victory and that it stunk of necromantic magic so I let Taffeta get back to destroying it.
One grey crystal down, but still no golden cylinder, so we rested up just outside to face hopefully nothing. I mean, I wanted there to be nothing but I think everyone else still wanted to smash things. I did learn a new metaphor from Baine during this sit down, to have ‘beef’ with someone, which sounded similar to how Bon used to always say he had a bone to pick with someone.
Anyway, we then headed inside the skull right up into the cranium, no one else seemed to be around. When we got to the last room at the top I stepped in to detect the cylinder, with Ghesh and Baine right beside me, and then the door thuds shut.
Three uber creepy (shadowfae?) elves had emerged from the shadows, one of which had closed the door, the other two punched the wall and water instantly filled the room.
I managed to slow them all down, literally, with my magic. But then I was overwhelmed by my spell again and I made all this fog appear around me. Great for keeping me hidden but I didn’t really know what was happening in the room anymore, so I kept to the edge and out of the way. I did hear a lot of underwater weapon thunks, I briefly saw Taffeta pop in mid air (mid water?) and disappear, and then as the water eventually resided I’m sure I heard a bear somewhere?
Eventually I heard Baine talking to one of the shadowfae, so I walked over (also forgetting I was still foggy, stupid really) in time to hear them say they’ll pretend they never saw us, and then they were gone.
After that finding the cylinder was pretty easy, turns out it was safely tucked away in a normal chest, so we grabbed it and got out of there quick. With a quick teleport from Aurelia we did just that. The magic she does is still really cool, I wish my magic was as tidy as hers sometimes.
Much Love,
BB
As BB signs off and looks up Khazifa has already sat down and started chatting to the group, thanking them for their help. As the conversation comes to a slight lull BB interjects
‘Khazifa, have you ever seen something called a Brontosaurus?’
A large grin crosses Khazifa’s face
‘Ooooh yeah I have, in fact, I can show you exactly what they look like'
