Second entry in the journal of Wil Frozendagger
A Frozendagger, upon ascension to adulthood, shall be adorned with a title befitting of his station from his elders or his peers.
The Frozen Dagger. The Bulwark. The Wronged. The Faithful. The Steward. The Dark Rider. The Waveborn. The Swiftstriker. The Nomad. The Silverhanded. The Starseeker. The Steadfast. The Longstrider. The Smith. The Strongarm.
These are the titles of my sixteen predecessors, and I am proud to finally be able to join them as the Ocean’s Devil. I shall wear this title with the utmost pride, no matter what may come my way.
It was actually a friend of my grandfather, the Longstrider, that had given me the name. Feather Roots, as my grandfather knew him, is the aaracokra chieftain that I had previously met on my travels and was the first one to tell me that Kantas was where he had done his adventuring. Of course this was a massive shock to me, for I had just assumed he was a raider or a pirate of some kind, but to know that he genuinely had undergone a large voyage filled me with a sense of pride that I can barely describe.
This feeling quickly became… something else.
As it turns out in my last entry where I spoke of being the last living Frozendagger, I had spoken in error.
Grandfather was apparently quite the ladies man, and while I wouldn’t normally hold that against anyone, it kinda isn’t so great when you have a wife and a ten year old son that you left halfway across the world. And so, he ended up having more children. I couldn’t tell you who with or where. Feather Roots couldn’t either. He told me to find Laheb, a dracorc chieftain I had also encountered, and that he might have answers.
He tried to play dumb with me for a second but once he knew I knew, he let his guard down. It was supposed to be a secret, and grandfather was pretty adamant about that point too, as he had gotten the last member of their adventuring party to erase the memories of the other two. Straight mindwipe. Even if they did know once upon a time, they couldn’t tell me now.
I am deeply confused. The main reason he had gone on the journey in the first place was to raise the money to build a smithy for us. For his family. And then he goes and what? Just makes another, and then forsakes that one for the original yet again? A Frozendagger defends his family to the bitter end, so how can one choose between them? What was that change in heart about? And why go so far as to wipe the slate clean from your own friends’ minds when he never even told us about Kantas? Who was ever going to find out?
Laheb attempted to scry on the other Frozendaggers, and I saw faint figures in ice or something. I fear there is far more to this than I know, and I fear that my newfound cousins are in danger. I needed to find them, and alongside a blessing in the form of a scale to go with one of Feather Roots’ feathers I had received earlier, Laheb gave me a name and a location. I have a feather and I have a scale, and if I go to the Feywild and this Traverse guy starts playing games with me, I’ll pull his goddamn teeth out.
Forever are we glorious,
Wil Frozendagger
P.S. I really hope those cousins don’t try and claim the chieftaincy when I find them. A succession crisis is the exact opposite of what I need right now.
