Just sitting relaxing in the Ettin, I get a request by the OMTC if I can come and help again with another missing person case, which curiosity took hold of me and I went.
At their headquarters, we are told about how there is a dungeon complex in the quarry and a being that lives there who allowed them to use it but their man who takes care of the business has disappeared for over a week and not been seen nor the expensive equipment they took with them. Other than myself there is Bliss a pink tiefling, Gegrun and Krevor as I understood their name was, a hobgoblin. They looked genuine and caring about the retrieval of Heret, so I decided I will provide my services.
While travelling across the road, I noticed how much busier it was then it used to, many travelers and alot that are from the minotaur country. We decided to rest for the night and arrive in the morning, decided to change the shape of the terrain around the camp and make it harder to be seen. My watch was uneventful but humorous as I saw the look of confused night critters and the silly birds that kept trying to perch on the non existent trees.
We arrive at the quarry in the early morning, and see how empty it is and it was evacuated some six months ago when it almost got overrun by undead that have been dealt with since.
We meet two others who apparently were trying to enter and do the same as us one was a human called Stedd I heard about from Arkadius before and an eladrin called Faye.
We spoke with the guard and got allowed in, they brought through Heret's horse that they found, I asked it it's name and asked if it knew anything about its master, which unfortunately was a dead end as suspected. We did find the expensive equipment in a bag of holding on Zuzu, that Krevor took hold of and passed it to the curious Gegrun who turned it upside down before anyone could stop him. We managed to save some of the potions of rest that kept falling and I mended the objects that got damaged but were lucky to avoid the broken potions of acid.
Of course I had to go again through explaining to Gegrun not to do that in the future again.
We go in the tunnel and all was extremely dark, luckily I could see a bit same as most in the party, except for Stedd. Faye said that no lighting magic will work until we reach a specific skull at the end and answer the word Candle to it's riddle. We notice three different routes one already explored and excavated tombs at the end, one that took us to the study of that being and another one that no one has tried to check yet. But almost everyone apparently wanted to go through the being's study. To be honest I was curious about it too. So onwards we went after an uncomfortable realisation of it being able to read our minds and thoughts. We went through a teleport and throughout a corridor with blood flowing on both sides, we found a body at some point just left there to rot, so I moved it aside and gave it a more respectful position of rest. As we arrived at a study and saw a sort of projection of a creature that looked like a half elf writing to the side. It offered some tea but I refused and so did some including Bliss who gave me the impression of a sensible person. Whom I offered a drink from my water skin that comes from the refreshing lake water from the Galavirs. We head off through another passage after that's behind the fireplace, through a room designed like a chess 7 and goliath pieces all pushed to the side with a tiny regular chess set on a pedestal that I sensed a sort of magical connection between both. And was explained by Faye it being a test of mental capabilities they went through before and how impressive it was. We went through corridors and staircase that looked treacherous but no traps were triggered as we arrive through to a sort of sewer, we heard some noises in the distant dark of a non understandable language bug but nothing I couldn't solve with a spell. Under a request from Bliss I helped her with understanding too as she went invisible to investigate the noises, she reported back to me that was some fish people and her description made me recognize them as the gullible Kua-toa as I recommended a way for her to trick them I lost contact and soon after I heard fighting noises. Me, Gegrun and Stedd went after the noises to find out that Faye and Krevor whom the latter took the position of Kill first ask questions later. I afcourse was annoyed for they would have been more useful alive than dead. As we checked the cages they been moving we found Heret in a terrible condition but alive, we started hearing chanting coming from nearby, Many of us were curious to check this same as me. Going in, I saw over a dozen Kua-toa chanting, people hanging and tied down in a sacrificial manner and a Mind Flayer, A creature my mother always warned me of their cunning ways. Not more than a minute passes before a full on fight happens as I shapeshift into the familiar and useful in large fights great ape form. At some point while being attacked by this fish people, I thought I saw something weird about Gegrun but soon I realise he was no longer himself as he attacks me savagely but I knew he would be fine soon and that mind flayer was the biggest threat there was. I went for them and managed to destroy their illusions, I grab them annoyed and they suddenly disappear from my hand but my anger of my escaped prey was cut short really fast as I hear an anguished scream as I look behind me and see to my horror Gegrun killing Stedd as he turns around with a look that was most definite not his, the look of blood lost and murder and I knew I had to stop them before they do more damage they will regret later. I attack him twice putting him down thinking that he came back from worse and all would be fine. I See a brain like creature appearing near him and jumping away. I asked to try and catch it alive but then I realize Gegrun not responding to any healing magic of mine. That's when I lost interest in all the world around. As I heated his heavy body picking up his sword and shield and started walking. at some point I got stopped by Krevor who out of all things asked for me to apologise for calling out their idiocy earlier or have a duel. I just couldn't care less at that moment as I apologise and put Gegrun's body on the horse and gallop away to Port Ffirst.
Passing through town, people looking at the corpse and the man who might as well be looking like a corpse too from how exhausted I felt from not stopping travelling, except when I had to slow down for Nightshadow's sake. I head straight for the only person I know I could fully trust in town, and could give the private place that I required.
Just as I knock on Ffirst Airmail’s office door, Arkadius opens the door with a smile as he sees my face and our friend's body behind me saying
"Is that .. who and what I think it is?"
"I need privacy and a few things, can I use your office? "
Arkadius doesn't even say more just helps me lift Gegrun's body inside and lay him down on his desk as he goes and tells his staff to leave for the day, he comes back soon after asking what will I need as I give him the list and my pouch of gold he tried to argue but he then thought better as he took it and left.
Mathew started removing the armour and got some water and cloth as he started wiping the dust and blood from the young half-orc's face.
Arkadius arrives back and gives Mathew the large diamond and jar of ink and moves out of the way offering any help needed.
Mathew started drawing angelic symbols around Gegrun's face he never knew he known before as he starts chanting in celestial calling back to his friend soul putting the stone in his hand as payment.
Mathew kept feeling like something is wrong but he kept pouring his entire being into the spell as suddenly his wings come out of his back but unlike it's usual form they were glorious white with a faint glow to them, his chanting increases in volume as the desk and the building starts shaking and his eyes start shedding golden liquid.
Suddenly the symbols around Gegrun and the diamond started an increasing glowing golden hue and as it becomes blinding as it starts to fade straight away after leaving behind the body of Gegrun still lifeless clear of all the symbols, the diamond having vanished.
Mathew stands there in shock.
"It-t-t-t Can't-t-t be!" As he screams in anguish " It's supposed to work!"
Arkadius had been holding his eyes closed since Mathew started his magic. His eyes opened slowly on hearing Matthew's words.
"I n-n-need to do it again, I might have done something wrong!" As he stands up looking if he had enough ink or if he needs more.
Arkadius wracked his brain hard. “I… Think you did it right? I mean, it's not a spell I know. But it seemed right. To me.”
Mathew looks back at Gegrun, stops and a look of stubbornness appears on his face.
"Then I am going to speak to him!"
Arkadius frowned.”Hmm. It might… I don't know, help? Will it help?”
"It will be his last will." Mathew states as he stands to the side of the body claps his hands together and they start glowing letting small wisps of golden smoke as he puts two fingers to Gegrun's head and and a full hand on top of where his heart is saying "Sooth um tul eth, Thle um"
Gegrun's eyes open but golden light emit from them.
Mathew says " I have failed to bring you back, please forgive me for failing you. You deserved better. "
The mouth opens with a soft golden glow and Gegrun's voice could be heard "Be nice, be just, be kind. Leave every place better than you found it. And fight for those who can't. Oh, and don't worry about it. It's warm up here." As the eyes and mouth shut, the latter giving the semblance of a kind smile.
Mathew drops to his knees saying " And the world just grew colder with your loss my friend, enjoy your eternal peace. " and starts shedding tears for the great warrior he knew.
Arkadius moved over to his friend’s side, placing a hand in Matthew's shoulder. Ida, Arkadius’ cat familiar, joined him too, rubbing up against Mathew in an attempt to soothe him. “I'm sorry, Mathew. Gegrun was an amazing guy, and… He will be missed. And we should heed his words. Be nice.”
