Twelve fucking gold pieces. Fuck that guy thought Taz, as he made his way back to Port Ffirst.
At least unlike most of the people who made the mistake of working for Heret, he was alive. That's the best thing he could say about his little trip down the mines.
It was bad from the start. He had thought he was going on a standard adventure with Faye - who'd told him about some mines that needed exploring. Freelance work - that's where he excels. But instead, Heret had turned up, and then asked him to sign a contract (which Taz never signed, but Heret was too busy to notice) for 22GP, with the caveat that every time someone did something Heret didn't like he would deduct 5gp.
The job was to go and look for some mercenaries who had gone missing after being told to guard the mines entrance or something, but Taz didn't really care about that either. The real thing was - he just wanted to see the mines. They had been calling to him. He knew there was something down there, something worthwhile.
And the mines were not at all empty either- as there was something living in them. What it was, Taz wasn't exactly certain, but from what he'd understood, it was some sort of ghost called Lex. The ghost had some sort of home there too - a study and some other rooms - although with Lex having no body Taz couldn't really work out why he needed rooms. What the hell had Heret been thinking, setting up a mining operation inside the home of this guy? What an idiot.
What's more, Lex was full of interesting propositions. Firstly, he wanted someone to sort out a kind of damp problem in his basement, for which he offered 300gp. Secondly, he was very interested in acquiring the blood of twelve humanoid sacrifices, which would apparently restore him to his body. He didn't outright state a reward for this, but Taz suspected it would be quite generous. And he didn't seem like a bad guy. Maybe he deserved a body?
Heret seemed a bit scared of all this and insisted they go to the rest of the mine instead. Taz had felt sorely tempted to join Faye - the only person in the group he knew and trusted anyway - who decided to hang out in Lex's study for the whole time instead of obeying Heret. But, there was still some feeling Taz had about the mine, so he went to explore with the others.
As it turns out, it wasn't a great choice. Apart from a few traps, and the disfigured corpses of some of Heret's less fortunate employees, they found precisely nothing. On leaving the mine, Heret had then docked his 'pay' 10gp because he hadn't spent enough time kissing Heret's ass or something like that. After which Heret somewhat carelessly went to find a new group of mercenaries to guard the entrance, apparently not overly bothered that they would all almost certainly die. Don't guard the entrance yourself then, I suppose you are too important for that.
Nothing, basically, for the time spent. Might have well as stayed in Port Ffirst, to which he was going back as quickly as possible. Still, there were just a couple of things he thought to do when he got back. He decided to ask for Wil's advice on this Lex guy. Should he think about getting that blood? Taz had no idea, but he felt Wil would know. Wil seemed into this kind of stuff, and he did the talking in your head thing quite a bit too. And, Taz would make a note to tell anyone interested in the OMTC precisely how they regarded the lives of their employees.
