I’m not made for war.
Walking across the fields after the fighting had stopped, past the newly made scars in the ground where that dreaded orange light had come from, was such a grim reminder of the dreadful power that hate and violence can have.
I'm glad I got to save the cloud giant Uriah and her husband from that violence as they laid there in the road. Everyone deserves some kindness, especially those who also just want this bloodshed and anger to stop. They returned that kindness two fold, even as my friends stood behind me in confusion. But to give credit where credit is due Ghesh, Markas, Serpentine and Dymik went along with it. Ghesh was especially happy when they got Uriah’s red and blue mask. Even the K'ul Goran cool elite guard member Durshik, an older tabaxi, seemed okay with it (I bet the good luck flowers I gave him helped).
Also, I'm still baffled they included me as part of the ‘elite’ squad. Either way, I'm glad to have provided some flower support for the others.
When Uriah dropped us off at the tower, the trials that awaited us in the storm giant’s prison chained to the tower were certainly not what I was expecting. I thought we were going to have to battle to free the ‘true ruler’ storm giant. That's how Uriah referred to them, says the one parading around and starting this war was all a ruse but that none believed them.
Getting to the trails was a trial in itself. We were all mostly trying to be clever about it, but turns out all we needed was Dymik poking the crown with a stick to get us started. That crown took us to a room with three doors. The first led to a room that split our group up and had us unintentionally fight each other. It made illusions of giants in the places where each other were. Luckily we all knew each others battle patterns well enough to figure it out. As soon as I thought that these supposed giants could be our allies, boom! We were back in the room of doors.
So with nothing left to lose, and a tower starting to crumble around us, we tumbled right into the next door and the next trial.
This one was a little harder I have to admit. We seemed to be placed in the memory of a young giant, said her name was Koriah, really loved her swing that was there with us. We figured out pretty quickly this was the true ruler that we had been sent to free. The hard part was trying to convince her of who she was. Between Markas being encouraging and Serpentine intimidating her into action (how very Serpentine) she managed to remember. She then got on her swing for one last time and disappeared away.
Though the swing was the way out, I didn't realise it would bring forward such strong memories of the past (now I understand why Markas was getting emotional the first time he used it). I saw you, well, us. Way back in that snowstorm, where you showed me how to channel magic through components for the first time. It was so vivid this memory, more so than any dreams I’ve had of home. It showed me how much I’ve changed since then, I wonder how different you are now.
Anyway, after all this we’re all back in the room of floating doors again. The tower was really in bad shape at this point, deep rumbles could be heard throughout. Markas seemed in a bad emotional state, tears everywhere, but before I could place a hand on his shoulder to console him Serpentine has opened the third and final door. And then we’re falling through the roof of the tower?? And Koriah is there with us with a thunderous look in her eyes, and then smack, we’re in a very messy bedroom.
Pieni, Baine, Traavor, Varis, and Sunday were all there and standing on a massive desk with a fiend?? Before I can really take it all in Markas is running over, tears flying, and punching the fiend to oblivion. Before it goes down it says “I’ve already won”.
At first I didn’t understand what it meant but as we’re all running out with the tower crumbling around us those trenches appear with the orange light, the elves kneeling and crying. I guess this is what that fiend wanted to happen all along. We might have stopped the fighting but I feel like something else, perhaps even worse, is on the horizon.
Koriah was very grateful for our help in freeing her, I would have liked to have a bit more of a chat with her but she obviously had a lot to sort out so I didn’t disturb her. She did leave us with a parting gift though, a mote of lightning now contained within all of us. I feel it crackling just under the surface now and then, I’m not sure what it can do but it feels pretty cool.
Sorry for the brief story this time. There’s a lot I need to sort out still, so not much time for writing. I’ve got two different high priests to deal with and a town to help heal. Who knows how this is going to end, I’m still hoping for the best.
Much Love,
BB
