Letter I
Dear Thea,
Still alive. So is everyone else. I think. The war is over, for now. There’s always more to come. Will write with the whole story soon as I can.
All my love,
Baine
Letter II
Dear Thea,
Things are settling down. The different fighting groups here in Kul Goran have gone their separate ways and the fighting between them seems to be over, for now. The elves fucked off, probably back to where they came from. The Kul Gorani survivors are picking up the pieces. The Shunned have claimed some land to the south and they aren’t giving it up but honestly that’s for Kul Goran to figure out. Apparently it’s a case of Who Was Here First and that’s their own fucking hornet’s nest to sort.
It was a bit of a mess, frankly. All these mercenaries from Kantas were hired and got stationed all around Kul Goran where the Errant Guard reckoned we’d be best suited. Me, the boss man, Sun, Traav and Pieni got placed with the higher-ups and tasked with taking out the Big Fucker; a storm giant in a large tower that he took with him everywhere. He was apparently the one giving the orders. Cut the head off the snake and so on. He was said to be a storm giant but also most likely not a giant, but instead a fiend posing as one. Fucking fiends.
So all these giants are coming over the hills and the Kul Gorani are coming out to meet them outside Zot Goran and the elves are doing their best to stop both sides from fighting and in the middle of all this we set out with two others to sneak our way to that tower.
It was misty as hell and basically a full on blizzard so we did alright, even if me and Varis aren’t the quietest pair. Pieni helped, he’s got that Druid magic that makes you sneak real good.
The tower was the weirdest thing: this 30 foot thing made of solid steel, on wheels. Had the big lad been wheeling it around to and from battle all this time? Fuck if I know. Boss man had been inside it before, apparently, and said there was a trap door at the top but we figured since they’d already broken in that way once it was probably barred now. We didn’t want to split the party - never split the party, Thea, it’s never a good idea - so we took a deep breath and crept in the front door. Turns out the tower was bigger on the inside, somehow? Like, giant sized.
There was no one on the bottom floor but Sunday used her magic and sensed a fiend up top so we snuck up the massive stairs and ta-daa, there they were. Three massive frost giants (I like those, they aren’t fireproof at all) and two weird looking, orange-furred things. Looked like foxes, a little bit, except they stood up on two legs.
And we fought them. And we won. Sunday and Varis went for the fiend and Traavor did what does best which is hide and shoot people brutally when they least expect it. I got to borrow Tuevel because Varis can fly and I left Gary in Wa, so I got to ride the Superfast Stag and that was cool. Pieni is fucking dangerous with a dagger and he kept the giants distracted so I could smash them to bits.
The whole time this fiend (turns out there was just one, he was using magic to make a decoy sort of) was throwing these brutal spells at Sunday and Varis, and Pieni. I didn’t see much of it but when they whizzed past it was like I could smell.. I dunno, just death. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, I’ll tell you that. Luckily, Sunday can dodge pretty much anything, Varis is more armor than man and Pieni is magical as fuck. It didn’t take. We came well prepared and it paid off.
I finished off the third giant and was about to join the others fighting the fiend when the roof caved in, sort of. In falls an angry looking giant, followed by Markas, Ghesh, BB, bloody Serpentine and some guy I’d never seen before.
Markas, full on crying by the way - gotta find out why and lay the hurt on whoever upset him, he monk-flips his way onto the table and finishes off the fiend with his sword. As it crumpled down it went “I’ve already won”, like a dickhead.
The giant that came through the roof turned out to be friendly. She was some sort of high-level general that got kidnapped by the fiend and she wasn’t keen on this war at all. She blew a massive horn and then it was all over. We thought.
Once out of the tower we start gathering up the wounded and Varis and I look for the rest of the order. Suddenly the ground starts lighting up orange, in long, glowing lines. Remember how I told you the ground in Kul Goran was sucking up any blood you spilled on it? Well.
The elves had been trying to stop everyone from fighting because everything you spilled some blood, you were making a small blood sacrifice. This war, this whole thing, all these lives lost - it was to make a very very large blood sacrifice. This fiend, when he said he’d already won, well. He apparently had.
We don’t know what it means. We don’t know what he was trying to do. But for now, we can only keep an eye out and be ready for whatever comes.
Fucking fiends, Thea, I swear.
There’s something I haven’t told you about Avernus. Something you deserve to know, I think.
When we went, we were in deep trouble at one point and we needed help. So we did the one thing you should never do with fiends - we made a deal. Sunday, Varis and I, we’re all on a contract. In five years time, Varis and I have to go back to hell and serve someone named the Sanguine Rose for five years. Sunday has to go in three years, and stay for thirty, cos she made another deal for me and Varis. (I still haven’t properly yelled at her for that. I’m gonna, don’t worry.)
But the story doesn’t end there. Thea, I’m joining the order. I’m swearing the oaths and I’m gonna spend my life fighting evil wherever it rears its ugly fucking head and I’m going to protect those who can’t protect themselves and before those three years is up, I’m going to kill the Sanguine Rose.
It’s going to be okay. I’m not alone.
I miss you. But I have a home and a family, and I know that’s what you wanted for me. It’s going to be okay.
I’ll write you soon again.
All my love,
Baine.
