A loud cacophony of bells is heard in BB’s dreams. It takes her a moment to understand what’s going on. Nothing’s ever set off her alarm spell before.
Now her eyes snap open, already trying to link with Blue. They manage to see that something or someone is coming, then there’s light, and Blue is gone.
BB bolts out the tent, remembering to grab her adventuring belt at the last minute as she does. She can hear them in the distance, snarls and other horrid sounds.
Once nearby where the activated stone is buried she gets out her driftglobe and whispers “daybreak” daylight spilling out from her hands and into the field around her. Whatever was here has already fled, but she catches a glimpse as they disappear into the night and away from the light pooling out from her. Big dog-like creatures with grey fur, their flesh rotting off, she even catches sight of a rib bone as they flee.
Dread sits heavy in BB’s stomach, it makes her feel sick.
Further into the field, at the burial site of the stone, some relief is to be had. The stone is still there, though those creatures made a good attempt at digging it out. The ground full of claw marks and a corner of the stone just peeking through. As BB reaches out and touches the stone, pulling it from the distrubed earth, a scream rings out across the night. It’s clearly coming from inside New Hillborrow.
With the stone in hand BB sprints to the scream’s source, casting spells to make her go even faster “No no no no no no no no no” becoming a whispered mantra as she rapidly approaches the town.
It’s Tobin, something’s attacked him in his house. He’s still alive. He’s still alive but bleeding a lot. As BB feeds him a healing potion the rest of family emerge from hiding, safe. Thank goodness. They didn’t really see what it was, just that it was savage and big. Really big. Looking around the house certainly confirms this, the place is trashed. Was it looking for something here? While taking a moment to concentrate on the house, she notices the silence of night is no longer there. The rest of the town is awake.
Tobin’s wounds have finally healed, but he’s running a fever as well. It won’t go down. BB looks up at the others, mirroring the concern on their faces.
“Stay here with him. I’m going to find the elders, find out what’s going on. I’ll let them know what happened here”
Turns out Tobin wasn’t the only one to be attacked. An older man, Lapis, fell victim and is also running a high fever. Even the animals in town were targeted, including poor Chirper’s birds. With the elders and Chirper’s help Tobin and Lapis are stabilised, but the fever remains. Chirper says it’s a powerful sickness, maybe magical, and it stinks of death. With this news the elders turn to BB to seek help, they almost seem reluctant to put this burden upon her.
Their kindness almost makes her want to cry.
Of course she’ll help, at this point she’ll do anything to help. So off to Port FFirst she goes, to the only temple she’s really set foot in, the temple of Two Faiths. Some of the younger acolytes are there, and more than willinging to help. BB can’t thank them enough and tries her best to explain what happened on the way back to New Hillborrow. Once there the acolytes spring into action, but BB stays out of the way, healing and illness have never been her thing. Instead BB goes out to inspect the mentioned fallen animals. Many are punctured by bite wounds and drained of all fluids, even just touching them causes the corpses to turn to dust. Even more information to add to BB’s growing confusion and dread.
Once back in town, BB seeks out the acolytes, perhaps they’ll have some good news for her. They shake their heads, whatever this fever is they can’t break it, it’s not something they’ve encountered before. BB still thanks them, she deeply appreciates their help and rapid response.
That night BB tries to sleep, Blue now resummoned and the stone nearby in the tent, but that feeling of dread won’t go. The sickness it leaves in the pit of her stomach won’t leave her alone, like the memories of those creatures she saw. The corpses. The injuries.
She’s going to make this right, she’ll do anything to make this right. Anything.
