Faye sits alone in their room at the flourished hook, candlelight illuminating their glazed looking green eyes. They take out a quill and some parchment and begin to write.
Dear Mother,
I’ve never really tried writing to you before. I guess that’s because until now I haven’t really thought it possible that there was a way to help you. I made a pact with Belinda, I made allies, by helping people and sure that helped but it wasn’t enough to take her on… Her power has always dwarfed mines.
Faye thinks of Stedd and Bubbles and winces hoping they’ll forgive what they’re thinking of doing.
But then a few days ago Heret, a business man ally of ours, offered us a job. Simple really just clear out some mines of an evil presence, I’ve bested giant’s so what’s a little necromancer. These mines though… they were not ordinary and it wasn’t just a simple wizard dabbling in the darkest of arts.
They were testing us, seeing if we were worthy. Trap after trap, puzzle after puzzle we made it further into the darkness. Not too bad considering the only paladin among us was a turtle…
We made it to a study and I got my first insight as to how powerful this individual was. The room was trapped you see the corridor was dripping with blood. I’m in touch with the weave just like you taught me but even I couldn’t break my way through his magic. Whoever this Lex was he had access to powerful magic…
Eventually he finally allowed us into his lair. There was an armoured guy with a giant sword and screaming face but no sound… Some of the religious types we had seen evidence of on the inside angered him it seems. Let’s just say I wouldn’t want to do that…
Faye thinks back to the vision Lex showed them:
Blackness… Utter void. And then: a single note of white falling through the sky. And then another…. And another… a fourth; a fifth; until snow is all falling all around me. I’m back in the Winter Court. This should be my worst nightmare. But she’s not here sitting on that icy throne. I am. And then he speaks to me tells me he can help me find my mother.
I know he has me now. I can’t turn this down and I hope you can forgive me for what I have to do.
Faye fold the note neatly. Bright green eyes full of the promise of life brought by spring gaze out of the window up to the moon. They well up. White seeps in from the top of their scalp washing over the brown vibrant curls of their spring time form and leaving in its wake hair as white as fresh snow… a tear rolls down as resolved icy blue eyes open as the note is set ablaze.
“I’m sorry.”
