"Grandad! Grandad! Tell us another story from your time in the guild!"
"leave Grandad alone boys, he's probably tired."
"But moooom..."
"It's alright Love, I don't mind, you know me and how much I love telling stories. Gather round little ones, I have a good one today. This isn't one of my stories, but as you know, the guild sees all.
The former intelligence master of the Kantas Guild of thieves lent back in his rocking chair, lit his pipe and took a deep drag before saying, "this is the story of seven idiots, one of them a sorcerer looking for help, the other six, adventures, after some coin..."
Ghesh was a Dragonborn sorcerer, not a brilliant one mind, but good enough to become the household mage to a wealthy family of Kobolds in the Kobold city of Kundar.
His employers were wealthy land owners, they kept control over local mines and made their coin off leasing rights, this of course meant that not only were they wealthy, but they were also rather lazy. Remember little ones, free coin leads to settling for less. True ambition comes from working for your money.
In any case, this family the Gearturners, had rivals, money does that after all. Their biggest rivals were the Coperlights, a mining family, rich from exploiting the Gearturners mines, but sick of paying the lease. This generations old rivalry lead to the events that followed.
The Coperlights house wizard, Tix the Kobold, decided it was time to embarrass the Gearturners once and for all, she challenged Ghesh to a duel, that she knew she couldn't loose. Ghesh, also knew this, so he put out a cry for help, hoping some experienced and trained adventurers would come to his assistance. What he got was two Dwarven Zealots, two half orcs with existential crisees, a human thief and a human fighter, and none of them had any idea what they were doing.
Plans were made, argued, scraped and remade. Everything from, bribery, murder, kidnapping, theft and double crossing was discussed and the plan they settled on... was terrible.
Flix the thief, accompanied for some reason by one of the 7 something foot half orcs scouted the place, a more standout pair you could not find in a city of 3 foot Kobolds... and yet Flix scouted the house, found the traps and determined the layout, almost without detection. He also, "happened" to bump into one of my operatives, who made him an offer, but we will get back to that.
In the mean time, the rest of the party went to search for some tools they would need for their plan.
The next day the plan was set in motion. Two flaming arrows flew into the kitchen from a back alley, starting a small fire, that by some mysticism smoked like a pit fire, I've always suspected the half orc cleric for that, I misrember his name though, apologies Little ones I'm not a young as I once was... In the meantime Erik and his HalfOrc friend, ugh, I do have a terrible memory for orcish names, seemed to skulk away from more or less where the arrows must have been fired...
As if out of no where, the dwarves Dvärgar and Doombar ran forward, wielding buckets of water shouting "FIRE! FIRE!" and bodily forcing out the members of the family inside, funnily enough, Trix was pushed slightly further from her family than needed...
Dvärgar put out the fire while Doombar pocketed the smouldering remains of the arrows, they then exited, triumphantly boasting of their deeds, and the family rewarded them for their efforts. The first coin was made from this quest. But more importantly the crowd was distracted but Dvärgar screaming about his God, the fool even managed to get a couple of people to follow his faith...
In the mean time, the Coperlights had been given assistance, healing and water was provided to them, especially Trix and especially water from a certain flask that Flick was handing her while disguised. One of my operatives also mentioned that he was sure he saw Flick with the Wizards book of spells, but when he looked back the wizard had it, funnily enough though the next day it was ruined...
The day of the duel all the well to do families attended, and most of our adventurers, but not Flick...
It was a close fight, even drugged, for that was what she was after drinking Flicks water. Trix was a better spellcaster than Ghesh, but in the end, one thing gave him an advantage, Dragonborn are strong. In a ditch attempt to take the fight, Ghesh roared forward and bit down into the Kobolds small neck... incapacitating her. The duel was won... sort of.
Our adventurers went back to their employer, claimed their reward from Ghesh and made for the portal to leave town, only a minor detour was made to hand off the deed to the mine, that Flick had liberated form the Gearheads to my operative, gold was exchanged and the adventurers left post haste, some rumour was going around town of 6 foreigners slaughtering a bar full of citizens the night before, no deaths apparently, but quite a few people out of action none the less. And some mention of on of these foreigners being a massive racist about Kobolds...
It was a while before the Coperlites recovered from the humiliation of that duel, and by then the politics of Kundar had taken quite a new turn, the Gearheads, suddenly found themselves no longer owning the deeds to many of their most prized properties. Some new corporation was set up, almost overnight and had proven, through perfectly ordered paperwork, that the mines were theirs. Something was a foot in Kundar, I should know it was the guilds doing...
"Right little ones" said the old spy master, cleaning his pipe, "the rest is a story for another time, off to bed."
