Nowhere grew up in a small city, and due to how he looks he was never trusted. He always wanted to learn - books were something he coveted but was never allowed near.
Living on the streets, in the shadows of academic buildings was a struggle for him both physically and mentally. When he reached his early twenties he was at his lowest ebb. He was starving, destitute, and worst of all, with no belief that things could ever change.
One night, whilst curled up in the shadows of the academic buildings he yearned to be let inside, he is approached by a man. Well dressed, suave, charming. The man makes him an offer. He will give Nowhere a place in the world. If "they" do not trust him to enter the academic buildings, then the man will find him private education.... in return for a favour later in life.
So Nowhere is given private education. He learns to read, he learns to write, he learns to scribe. As the years go on he becomes an artisan at what he does, and his reputation outweighs his looks. People begin to trust him for his work and finally he is accepted into the scribes guild. Now he is in his late twenties he is happy. He is able to act on his passions to write, and investigate, and to tell tales.
But now he is visited again by the man. Who calls in his debt. The man tells him, "I am to send you away from here. To another place. Your job there is simple." Nowhere is given a day to prepare. The man returns and with a snap of his fingers Nowhere is now somewhere else..... and with him, fused into his flesh are chains which twist around to his back. On his back, attached to those chains, is a book.
Just a book.
